  2. Introduction (1) • Cancer is the second cause of death after cardiovascular diseases in the world. In 2008 7.6 million people died from cancer, which is 13% of all deaths. • In 2008 12.6 million people were diagnosed to have cancer in the world, which is 188 case per 100 000 population. • Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising with an estimated 13.1 million deaths in 2030. (WHO)

  3. Introduction (2) Dynamics of cancer rate in Armenia

Introduction (3) According to literature data. • Cancer incidence among rural population is lower than in general one • Cancer mortality in rural population is higher than in general one • Some neoplasms, such us prostate, ovaries cancers, melanoma are more frequent in rural than in general population • Positive relationship was found between pesticide use and leukemia, Hodgkin disease, multiple myeloma, melanoma, bladder, lung, colon, rectal, prostate cancers.

Introduction (4) • There are no data concerning to cancer prevalence and structural pattern in rural population of Armenia, as well as in population of Ararat valley • Many questions concerning to pesticides aren’t yet clear, their usage influence isn’t observed taking into consideration that Armenia has unique developed agriculture and wide assortment of pesticides being used.

  6. Introduction (5) The aim of our research was to study peculiarities of incidences and structural pattern of cancer in rural population of Ararat valley.

  7. Methods and materials (1) Ararat region – teritory- 4.2% population- 8.8% agriculture- 6.5% Armavirregion – teritory- 7% population- 6% agriculture- 17%

Methods and materials (2) • Research design - quantitative survey • All cases of cancer registered in National Institute of Oncology during 2011 and 2012 were included in study. • Data on population size taken from National Statistical Service of Armenia. • The total number of all cases was 2395: • 1099 in 2011 • 1296 in 2012.

Conclusions (1) • Cancer morbidity in Ararat valley is less than in general population of RA, • One year fatality in rural population is higher, than in urban population of Ararat valley (2011), • Upper and middle airways (2011), prostate (2011) cancer morbidity is higher in rural population, than in urban,

Conclusions (2) • Upper and middle airways (2012), intestine, sigma, uterine body, ovaries, breast, prostate (2012) cancer morbidity is higher in urban, than in rural population, • Cancer morbidity in men is higher, than in women in Ararat valley • In 20-39, 40-59 age groups cancer morbidity is higher in women than in men • In 60+ age group cancer morbidity is higher in men
