  1. Scene Size-Up

  2. Size-Up and Problem Solving • All of the following slides require you to look at the slide and make quick decisions about either what you would do as first on the scene or second on the scene correcting problems associated with the scene. • In all cases, you should work through your own BIR and Size-up prior to making any further decisions. • Talk about these with you partner. Get their opinions, concerns, and thoughts about the picture.

  3. Is the Firefighter going solo or does he have a partner. • Where are his tools? • Is the attic space involved? Will he need tools to access the attic space? • Are they entering the structure here or just cheap shotting the fire area? • Proper line size? • What else would you like to know before sending crews inside?

  4. The next scene has three slides. • The first shows you arriving at the scene. • The second shows securing utilities • The third is the first due engine entering the structure on the B Side • As Command, What is next? • What is your updated report consist of? • What about the assignments for the next 2 arriving engines?

  5. You arrive 3rd due and have been assigned RIT. • What equipment do you need to gather? • What do you want to find with your walk around? • What is your first action after preparing your crew for their assignment?

  6. What do you see and what do you think? • These units are attached to each other on the D Side. • The front door is on the A/B Corner near the flag. • What can you determine about the fire area? • Is the door closed to the room?

  7. You arrive second due and the ladder company is already operating. • The Bat Chief is coming from North. • The ladder company is reporting fire on the room and attempting to access? • What is next? • Did you correct the ladder placement and instability?

  8. You pull up first due with a crew of 2. • Your second truck is 6 minutes out. • The homeowner is walking back into the house as you arrive. (Look at the front door) • What is you BIR? • What is your Size-Up? • What are your tactical priorities? • Do you enter the house to retrieve the homeowner?

  9. 2 Car MVA. You have a single female pt in this car and 2 pt’s entrapped in the second. The second vehicle is on its wheels upright. • When you arrive you find an off duty firefighter on the scene with the female in this car. • As command what is next? • How many medic units do you need? • What are your rescue concerns? • Do you have a problem with the firefighter working in or around this vehicle? • Cribbing maybe??

  10. You arrive 4th due and were assigned water supply. • You establish water supply and place your partner at the pump of the first truck. • You are free to assume command. • During your face to face the initial IC advises you that he is venting the roof to aid with attack. All crews are accounted for and a RIT is in place. • As command what is your initial action plan and tactics?

  11. Bread and Butter • You arrive 2nd due and find this picture • There is a hoseline entering the structure and no one is outside or around the scene. • You received no assignment from command • What do you do, from start to finish?

  12. You arrive second due to find this. • The initial IC appears out of sorts, excited, and extremely busy. • During your face to face, he tells you to take command. • As command you what? • The fire area is actually the D side of a 5 business strip mall. • Do you have an exposure problem? • How do you correct it?

  13. You arrive 3rd due to a trailer fire. Upon your arrival you report to the scene and find this picture. • When asked the individuals advise you they are the RIT for the interior crews. • They also advise they were fixing to get dressed and prepared if needed. • You find no command and determine that command is with the initial Lt inside the structure fighting fire. • What is next for you and your crew? • Be creative..
