2. John McCrae Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae. Born November 30 1872, Died January 28 1918. He was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I and a surgeon during the battle of Ypres. He is best known for writing the famous war memorial poem In Flanders Fields.

4. The Meaning In The Poem The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written after John McCrae witnessed the death, and presided over the funeral, of a friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer. The Poem was written on behalf of the dead who are buried in Flanders Fields. In the poem they ask for the living to carry on with the fight. And if they didn’t the dead would not rest in peace. It is still one of the most famous poems to be written about the First World War and is used in Remembrance services to the present day.

10. How did he Die ? • John McCrae did not die from being killed • He died from Pneumonia January 28, 1918, • He was buried with full honours in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission section of Wimereux Cemetery.
