  1. Niels Bohr and the Atomic Model Jennifer Meyer, Ed. S. Rutherford County Schools

  2. The Basic Unit of Matter • Three states of matter: • Solid • Liquid • Gas Atom • Basic unit of matter • Has a nucleus • Has a cloud of negatively charged electrons

  3. Parts of the Atom • Nucleus: center of atom • Neutrons: subatomic particles located in the nucleus of an atom with no charge • Protons: positively charged subatomic particle located in the nucleus of an atom • Electrons: negatively charged subatomic particles floating around the outside of the nucleus

  4. Atomic number • The number of protons in the nucleus

  5. Periodic table of Elements

  6. Periodic Table of elements • Element: something that cannot be broken down into smaller units • Element: have the same number of protons in the nucleus

  7. Periodic Table of elements • Dmitri Mendeleev • Russian chemist and inventor • Lived from 1834-1907 • First presented his periodic table in 1869

  8. Bohr Atomic Model • In 1913 Niels Bohr introduced his model of the atom • Field of atomic physics • Bohr’s model studies the arrangement of electrons around the nucleus

  9. Pop Quiz • What are the three states of matter? • Solid, liquid and gas • Solid, rock and lava • Water, sand and wind • Oxygen, nitrogen and salt

  10. Pop Quiz • The parts of an atom are neutrons, electrons, protons and: • Some elements • Solids • A nucleus • A cell membrane

  11. Pop Quiz • What is the atomic number? • The number of electrons in an atom. • The number of rings around an atom. • The time. • The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.

  12. Pop Quiz • What is an element? • Something that cannot be made into separate smaller parts. • Part of an atom • Part of a proton • Part of an electron

  13. Pop Quiz • Dmitri Mendeleev designed the Periodic Table of Elements. What country was he from? • Australia • Ireland • Denmark • Russia

  14. Pop Quiz • What prize did the Dane Niels Bohr win in 1922 for his atomic model? • First prize • A beauty contest • The Nobel Peace Prize in Physics • An Oscar award
