DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is a very commonly-used proprietary embroidery format originally from Tajima. The files contain only stitch commands for the embroidery machines. It is not very nicely designed but because of its age (it came about from punch card days) but the general ubiquity means it is as close to a standard as exists within embroidery. Some format changes are made such as to not affect the reading by embroidery machines and yet have the ability to be interpreted different on newer machines with newer functionality.

What is a DST format embroidery files? A DST file is a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) file saved in the Data Stitch Tajima (DST) embroidery format. It stores instructions for stitching an embroidery design with a sewing machine and includes codes that tell the machine to stop, jump, and trim, which directs the sewing needle. You can open a DST file in the desktop versions of Autodesk AutoCAD (Windows, Mac).
