  2. Mathematics Overview Two Toolboxes for grades 2 through 7 • Toolbox #1 for beginning of the year • Toolbox #2 for the middle of the year

  3. Toolbox #1 • Used to help teachers help students perform more successfully on the MEAP assessment • Used 15 days before the MEAP test • GLCE are representative of the previous grade level • Ex: Grade 3 content is grade 2 GLCE

  4. Toolbox #1 Contents • Fifteen days of assessments of each GLCE • Multiple choice • Short tasks • Long tasks

  5. Toolbox #1 • Provides effective strategies: • Understand, Plan, Solve • Ten Best Practices • Delivery of a lesson • Provides tools for teachers • List of teaching materials • Blackline masters • Grade level record keeping checklist • Contains Student Journal from long tasks

  6. Toolbox #1 • Day-by-day Instructional Plans • GLCE alignment • Materials needed • Suggested literature • Suggested vocabulary • Instructional suggestions

  7. Toolbox #2 • They are used as needed during the school year • Developed to teach the current year’s GLCEs • Designed to assist with improving student performance as the result of the MEAP test • For use in grades 2 through 7

  8. Toolbox #2 Dual Purpose • Used to inform previous grade AND • Used to inform current grade

  9. Toolbox #2 Format Each lesson is • Organized by topics Ex: Add and Subtract Fractions • Application activity/game • Evidence of Learning • Non-routine problem • For Struggling Students Section Interventions

  10. Toolbox #2 Teacher Tools • Blackline masters linked to the lesson • Video and pictures linked to the lesson • Journal prompts and rubrics • Example of how to use student responses • Student Journal from the Non-routine tasks

  11. Mathematics Toolboxes help teachers focus instruction • Toolbox #1 reviews and practices GLCEs tested on the MEAP • Toolbox #2 is a remediation to address weak areas • Results inform: • Curricular decisions • Material selection • Professional development
