  17. JCSW Archives and Oral Histories (J)- Ms. Kathryn Hammond Baker and Dr. Andrea Patenaude, Co-Chairs The Archives for Women in Medicine is a joint project of the Countway Library and the Joint Committee on the Status of Women. The committee established and funds a center for activities relating to the documentation of women in medicine. Envisions ways in which the historical record of women's accomplishments can be brought to bear on contemporary issues important to the life of the community; facilitates the creation of documentation on the experiences of its constituency; promotes and provides critical advice to documentation efforts including identifying and evaluating potential sources of documentation and funding. For more information about the Archives, its accomplishments, and the upcoming events, or to join the mailing list for the AWM email newsletter, please see http://www.countway.med.harvard.edu/rarebooks/AWM.shtml.

  18. By-Laws Review (J) - Dr. Susan Farrell and Ms. Lauren Kreisberg, Co-Chairs The Bylaws subcommittee is responsible for maintaining the JCSW bylaws, taking into consideration input from all JCSW members. The bylaws were significantly expanded and ratified in the Spring of 2009. Updates included a clarified statement of purpose, membership eligibility and responsibilities, meeting protocols as well as information on the creation and functioning of sub-committees. The bylaws are currently in final review by the Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs. Communications (J) - Dr. Jo Solet, Co-Chair (Staff co-chair to be determined) The Communications subcommittee is charged with increasing the awareness of the mission and goals of the JCSW. The Subcommittee also helps with distribution of posters and flyers for advertising events and with editing language in documents representing the voice of JCSW. Programs (J) - Chairs undetermined The goal of the Programs subcommittee is to deliver programs that assist women within the Harvard Medical Community to develop rewarding and successful careers and fulfilling lives. Within this mission is also the opportunity to highlight as speakers members of the Harvard Community and the JCSW.

  22. Membership (F) - Dr. Zeina El Chamali, Chair The Faculty Membership subcommittee is charged with the selection of new members to fill vacancies on the JCSW from among the women and men faculty applicants. Applicants are asked to submit a letter of approximately 250 words describing their interest in the JCSW and a brief biosketch. To ensure that we have the benefit of many faculty perspectives, the Subcommittee selects new members with the intention of reflecting diversity across several spheres including academic rank, personal background, and representation from diverse career tracks and departments across the Harvard Medical area quadrangle and at HMS affiliated institutions. Membership and Outreach (S) - Chair undetermined The Staff Membership subcommittee encourages applications and selects staff for JCSW membership who represent a broad range of diversity of employment, expertise, and background. Applicants are asked to complete a short application describing their interest in the JCSW. The committee also welcomes nominations for membership. Outreach (F) - Dr. Rhonda Bentley-Lewis and Dr. Marisa Silveri, Co-Chairs The JCSW Faculty Outreach subcommittee was established in the 2002-2003 academic year to create opportunities for dialogue, connection and feedback within various Harvard medical communities and bring pertinent issues back to the JCSW to inform the design and implementation of programs and initiatives.

  23. Civic Engagement and Service (S) - Ms. Wendy Zosh-McLean, Chair The Civic Engagement subcommittee organizes community service projects to encourage faculty, staff and students at the Medical and Dentals Schools to volunteer their time and talents. Visit the JCSW Civic Engagement and Service Initiative web site for more information. Employee Career Satisfaction and Advocacy (S) - Ms. Aun Em and Ms. KeyAnna Wright, Co-Chairs Unity Book Club (S) - Beth Beighlie, Chair This subcommittee seeks to bring the HMS/HSDM communities together through a book club. Career Satisfaction (F) - Dr. Andrea Farkas Patenaude, Chair Analyzing data from 2003 HMS Faculty Survey and preparing manuscripts for publication on various aspects of the data. Maternity Leave and Flexible Career Paths (F) - Dr. Fiona Fennessy, Chair During this past year, this subcommittee developed a proposal for providing central funds through HMS for maternity, adoption and parental leave for faculty working in pre-clinical departments in HMS. As part of this process, we collected data on the numbers of faculty who had or adopted children during 2000-2003 and used these data to project estimates of the cost to HMS of implementing a policy supported by central funds. We also collected data on faculty maternity leave policies at other U.S. medical schools. The proposal has been reviewed and approved by the JCSW and the HMS Dean's Council. The next steps are to present to the committee of Department Chairs and then to the Faculty Council. Next year, we plan to collect data on current policies at affiliate institutions.

  24. Gender Parity in Research Grants (F) - Chair undetermined Collectively, we share powerful financial incentives for achieving maximum funding to support high impact research enterprises. According to a report in Science (Dec. 15, 2000), NIH awarded an average of $250,838 in research funding to female Principal Investigators (PIs) in the year 2000, compared with an average of $306,472 to male PIs during the same period. There were several questions raised by this report: Do women submit fewer grant applications and/or request less funding? Are women awarded fewer grants or smaller budgets? To determine whether such discrepancies in funding exist at Harvard Medical School and its affiliated institutions, the JCSW, in collaboration with Hannah Bowles, PhD from the Kennedy School of Government, is conducting a study entitled, "Gender Parity in Research Grants at Harvard Medical School and its Affiliated Institutions." If the study detects gender discrepancies in funding among HMS faculty, institutions would then have incentive to consider the reasons for these discrepancies and to develop strategies and targeted interventions to improve fundability of all its investigators. Mentoring (F) - Dr. Dina Hirshfeld-Becker and Dr. Carol Warfield, Co-Chairs The purpose of this subcommittee is to understand barriers to successful mentoring and to make recommendations for ways of to improve mentorship of women faculty throughout HMS/HSDM. The subcommittee is working on two related projects. The first is to survey the women faculty at HMS/HSDM about their needs for mentorship, areas in which they would like mentorship, and qualities they would like in a mentor, using a broadly distributed anonymous questionnaire. The second is to pilot a faculty mentorship matching program, pairing mentors from among faculty members of JCSW with a small group of mentees from the HMS/HSDM female faculty, and assessing their experiences. Subcommittee members have obtained HMS IRB approval for this matching program, and are working on finalizing the initial broader survey to distribute to all HMS/HSDM faculty via email.
