  1. Pilot use of biomass for heating systems in public buildings 2nd PP meeting Portugal, 8-10 July 2013 Natasa Xenophontos Koudouna European Affairs Office

  2. Why biomass? In our SEAP (submitted to the Covenant of Mayors 23/11/2012) we have several actions/options for improving energy efficiency in municipal buildings (e.g. solar) and an action for energy savings in street lighting… We have a political commitment for awareness raising, educating and creating PPPs through investment in an Environment & Energy Centre.. However we chose to examine first the potential use of biomass through Green Partnerships because of the very high production of such waste in our city. In the framework of restructuring local government in Cyprus, we think that potentially Lakatamia could take over for Nicosia province the central treatment and management of biomass waste.

  3. Municipal Swimming Pool- a cost centre Lakatamia Nautical Club ‘Ulysses’ €46.838,08 Oil Cost for Water Heating System (months October 2012 – April 2013) Add photo

  4. Add photo Biomass Waste Treatment – possible savings? circa 12.000 cubic metres produced yearly (period: months September – May). Considerable fly-tipping Cost. Since 2009, a milling machine is used & methods of reuse are sought. Add photo

  5. Add photo Invest in Energy Efficiency Current use of oil boilers to be relieved by additional use of biomass boiler. Milling machine + dehumidifier + biomass boiler to be installed and connected to water pipes. Add photo Advantage: Biomass boiler is mobile and can be used to heat other municipal buildings.

  7. Activity plan In our capacity building planning we followed TUC’ s guidance & suggested Ghannt Chart. We presented pilot initiation at the 4th International Conference on RES &EE that took place in Nicosia on 6-7 June 2013. We met potential LAG members on 5 July 2013 at an event at the European Union House, entitled ‘Energy efficiency for overcoming the crisis’ (Technical Chamber, Environment Commissioner, UCM etc) We are in contact with the Cyprus Energy Agency which is likely to carry out our feasibility study and EIA for our pilot action. We spoke with Lakatamia Youth Council. They suggested a date for our 1st LAG meeting to take place the week starting 16/09/2013.
