  9. ValuesConfucianism • Confucius stressed a set of rules that all should respect. • If people followed these rules, social relationships would become harmonious. • Doing so also required a heightened sensitivity from the rulers and the ruled. It required benevolence and tolerance, of putting oneself in the shoes of others.

  10. ValuesConfucianism • Confucius stated the golden rule well before the Christians: "What you do not wish upon yourself, do not impose on others."

  11. Values • Modern Japan exhibits many characteristics of a well-functioning Confucian society. • However, it claims mostly Buddhist religious followings.

  12. Culture • Several waves of immigration from Asia, Europe, North America, and nearby Pacific islands, followed by a heavy importation of culture from China, developedaculture distinctively different from other Asian cultures.

  13. Culture • Important aspects of Japanese culture: • Face is a mark of personal dignity and means having high status with one's peers • Can be taken away, lost, or earned • Maintaining harmonious relationships • Politeness; express disagreements indirectly • Working for the universal good rather than individual good

  14. Culture • Since the Japanese strive for harmony and are group dependent, they rely on facial expression, tone of voice and posture to tell them what someone feels. • Geisha must stand confidently and cannot cry or perspire from heat or nervousness.

  15. Culture • Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It has gained widespread international fame for its focus on harmony, color use, rhythm, and elegantly simple design. • The simplistic characterization of the Ikebana is also evident in the colors of geisha makeup.

  16. Form • Tools • Bamboo brush • Wax/Oil • Snow white face • Rice-flour powder • Pat face with sponge • Thick eyebrows • Charcoal

  17. Form • Eyes • Red and black • Crimson lips • Sallflower juice • Sugar • Blacken teeth

  18. Function • Geishas are often seen as the center of original Japanese culture, or the last protectors of the old values and visual art. • Geisha was an institution of safety - with geishas, samurais and people could talk about their worries.

  19. Function • The geisha's appearance changes throughout her career. • Maikos wear the distinctive red under kimono and thick white makeup, while older geisha wear more sophisticated, less flashy style. • The older geisha has the experience and charm, so she does not require additional compensation for lack of skill.

  20. Facilitation • "Gei" means arts or performance in Japanese. "Sha" means people. • Geisha are traditional female entertainers accomplished in arts. • Some training includes: • Singing/Dancing • Flower arrangement • Tea ceremony • Calligraphy • Conversation

  21. Facilitation • Before WWII, young girls were sold to geisha houses by their parents. • After WWII, girls were given a choice between a normal career and a life as a geisha. • They lived with the okami, or headmistress, which they sometimes referred to as okaasan, or mother.

  22. Facilitation • Geisha girls and women are trained in a number of traditional skills performing mainly at teahouses, restaurants and private parties. • When men hire geisha to entertain at a party it may be necessary to: • Sing and Dance • Play an instrument such as a drum or flute • Speak about politics • Explain the rules of a drinking game • Give off flirtatious signals

  23. Facilitation • Geisha's makeup, hair, clothing and manner are calculated to indulge a man's fantasy of the perfect woman. • Men pay huge sums of money to have geisha attend to their every whim. • A true geisha is successful because she projects a sense of unattainable perfection. • In a time when Japanese wives were excluded from public life in general, geisha were the women who could play the role of attentive female at business gatherings
