  3. Cinder Cone Volcano • Consist almost entirely of loose, grainy cinders and almost no lava • Small volcanoes: about a mile across and about a thousand feet high • Very steep sides, with a small crater on top HOME

  4. Composite Volcano • Tens of miles across and ten thousand or more feet high • Moderately steep sides, with small craters on top • Consist of layers of solid lava flows mixed with layers of sand- or gravel-like volcanic rock called cinders or volcanic ash. HOME

  5. Shield Volcano • Large volcanoes: hundreds of miles across and tens of thousands of feet high • Low slope on the sides, with a large crater on top • Consist almost entirely of frozen lavas HOME
