  3. Preparing to Write a Proposal Identifying relevant opportunities Aligning project goals with program goals If applicable – organize a development team

  4. Preparing to Write a Proposal Do your homework: Read the Grant Opportunity carefully taking cues from keys points*

  5. Preparing to Write a Proposal Do your homework: Read supplementary information (NSF GPG) Review abstracts of past funded proposals Volunteer for a program review committee Speak with the program director and/or OAR personnel Begin well in advance – 3 or more months before proposal due date

  6. Proposal Writing Have a clear vision of your goals Strictly adhere to all formatting requirements (page length, font size, spacing, etc.) Consider the perspective of the reviewers Seek feedback, lay or trained, formal or informal OAR Assistance

  7. Proposal Writing • Summary of Goals/Objectives Format your proposal according to the RFP* Standard Format: Background/Significance Statement of Need Detailed Goals and Specific Objectives Assessment/Evaluation Plan Expected Outcomes Qualifications of Key Personnel

  8. Proposal Writing Read the solicitation and review criteria Proposal not only needs to get across your research, it needs to be readable. Think about flow and storyline. Format your proposal to enhance readability (font size, image placement, paragraph separation, headers, etc.) Use special formatting sparingly but effectively for emphasis.*

Other types of information often required: • Letter(s) of Support • Evaluation/Assessment Plans • Budget • Budget Justification • Data Management Plan • Description of Facilities • Vitaes • Abstract/Project Summary • Don’t wait until last minute Budget and Supplementary Material Other types of information often required: Abstract/Project Summary Vitaes (pay attention to formatting) Budget (Ask for what you need - OAR/OSP Assistance) Budget Justification Evaluation/Assessment Plans Description of Facilities Data Management Plan Letter(s) of Support

  10. Prepare for Submission Be open to comments and feedback Pre-review OAR/OSP consultation

  11. After Submission If funded: Celebrate! (then lots of work!) If not funded: Read reviews and prepare for resubmission
