  1. Don’t fall away! Don’t Depart! Don’t neglect your salvation! Don’t cast away your confidence! Don’t harden your heart! Don’t drift away! AStudyOf TheApostlePaul’s LetterTo The Hebrews How can we neglect so greata salvation? ~ Hebrews 2:3

  2. Hebrews: Christ Is Superior! Superior Person (1:1—4:13) Superior to Prophets (1:1-3) Superior to Angels (1:4—2:18) Superior to Moses (3:1-19) Superior to Joshua (4:1-13) Superior Priest (4:14—7:28) Superior to Aaron (4:14—6:12) Superior to Melchizedek (6:13—7:10) Superior to Levi (7:11-28)

  3. Hebrews: Christ Is Superior! Superior Pact to Moses’ (8:1—10:18) Superior Promises (8:1-13) but… We’ll only get to verses 1-5 today. Superior Sanctuary (9:1-15) Superior Sacrifice (9:16-28) Superior Results (10:1-18) Superior Principle (Faith) to Moses’ (10:19—13:25) Superior Things (10:19-39) Superior Actions (11:1-40) Superior Relationship (12:1-29) Superior Way of Life (13:1-25)

  4. Hebrews 8:1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  5. This means this kind ofpriest.Whatkind? A superior kind, the kind that has been proven over the course of at least the last 3 chapters. Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  6. After spending a lot of time in this letter listing numerous specific qualities that make Jesus a superior high priest, Paulhere listed two other more generic onesthatbringthem alltogether:putsim-ply, Jesus is seated, and He’s in Heaven. Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  7. TheideaofHisbeing seatedismuchmore significant than most people today and in our culture can ap-preciate. Why? Be-cause…    Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  8. There was no sitting in the Jewish taber-nacle; the furniture included no chairs, signifying that the work of those priests was never done (cf.10:11-13). Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  9. Each repeated sacri-fice served only to remind them that none of those sacri-fices ever provided completeforgiveness as Jesus has done … once for all (7:27). Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  10. TheideaofHisbeing in Heaven is also sig- nificant. Why? Be-cause…    Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  11. Jesus was enthroned in and ministered from the real place that was only typifi-ed by the holy of holies. Besides…  Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  12. NoLevitepriest ever sat ona throne;only a priest after the or-der of Melchizedek could be enthroned, for he was, as Jesus is, both priest and king (cf. Zec. 6:9ff). Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…

  13. As I said in our last study, Paul is still building on 7:12 where he affirmed that, since the priesthood changed, it was necessary that the law change, especially since Jesus could no more probate an inferior will than the most gifted lawyer can probate an inade-quate will.

  14. Hebrews 8:2 … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  15. Minister is from a term which simply refers to a servant: Jesus serves or ministers to and for both God and man, much like the ideas found in the terms intercessor and me-diator. … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  16. This word is related to saint and is from a term which refers toaholyplace.(Cor-responding with heav-ens inv.1,the original term here is actually plural—holy places.) … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  17. This word actually refers to a tent, which is exactly what the tabernac-le was—a tent, until King Solomon, of course, built the temple in its place. … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  18. This word refers to something that’s genuine; i.e., Paul wascontrastingthat which is real with that which was just a copy or a shadow of it. … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  19. What’s really impor-tant to realize here is that that which is spiritualisreal, whilethatwhichwas phy-sical was not real; i.e., the Jewish tab-ernacle was only a shadow pointing to the genuine article—the eternal kingdom of God. Besides…  … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  20. Since the real thing (the kingdom)is of aspiritual nature with the center of oper-ations in Heaven, that explains how Jesus can serve man onEarthwhileatthe time same be en-throned in Heaven. So…    … a Minister ofthe sanctuary and of the true taber-nacle which the Lord erected and not man.

  21. Since Jesusservesinasuperiorsanc-tuary (one erected solely by God), He’s superior to Aaron; and since He’s superior to Aaron, then the law He inaugurated is superior to the law Aaron served under—the point of the entire book of Hebrews.

  22. Hebrews 8:3-4a   For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is ne-cessary that this One also have something to of-fer. For if He were on Earth, he would not be a priest.

  23. Due to the contrast of verses 3 & 4, it’s obvious that Paul was referring … not only to the sacrifice Jesus had to make as a High Priest, but also … to where Heoffered that sacri-fice—in Heaven. For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is ne-cessary that this One also have something to of-fer. For if He were on Earth, he would not be a priest.

  24. In 9:24 Paul wrote that Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands which are copies of the true, but into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. And, as 9:25 goes on to indicate… This appearance of Jesus in God’s pre-sence—the real sanctuary—is a refer-ence to offering Himself to God on the Heavenly mercy-seat as our once-for-all-time sacrifice.

  25. Notice another con-trast here: While gifts and sacrifices are plural, some-thing is singular; i.e., the once-for-all offering of Jesus satisfies forever. Besides that…   For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is ne-cessary that this One also have something to of-fer. For if He were on Earth, he would not be a priest.

  26. The first term for offer here is in the present tense(re-ferring to that whichis done continually), while the second term for offer is in the aorist tense(re-ferringtothat which was done once-for-all-time). For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is ne-cessary that this One also have something to of-fer. For if He were on Earth, he would not be a priest.

  27. Hebrews 8:4 For if He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts accord-ing to the Law…

  28. Besides the fact that offering a once-for-all-time sacrifice to God in His very pre-sence in Heaven is obviously ideal, Je-sus (especially during Paul’s time) couldn’t have been a priest on Earth at all be-cause He wasn’t of the lawful tribe. In other words…   For if He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts accord-ing to the Law…

  29. If Hehad triedto of-fer anything to God as a priest on Earth, He would’ve violat-ed the Law & there-fore would’ve been worthy of death (Num. 3:10). See…  For if He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts accord-ing to the Law…

  30. God,throughDavid, predicted that Jesus would be a priest (Psa. 110:4), & since Jesus was born into the tribe of Judah (the kingly tribe) in-stead of Levi (the priestly tribe), then His priestly work couldn’t be carried out on Earth—it had to be performed in Heaven. For if He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts accord-ing to the Law…

  31. An interesting side-point in this verse is that the word offer is in present tense here as well, indi-cating that the tem-ple was still stand-ing & that this book was definitely pen-ned before AD 70. For if He were on Earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts accord-ing to the Law…

  32. Hebrews 8:5 …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  33. Fortheretobeacopy or shadow, there must be something real that it’s a copy or shadow of; the tabernacle and its contents as well as the priests and their work were all pat-terned after, and therefore a copy of, something real. In-cidentally…    …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  34. It’s interesting that the original term for pattern here is the term from which we get our word type. So, anyway…   …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  35. Paul was saying here that Moses knew from the very begin-ning that the taber-nacle was merely a shadow or copy of something real and (therefore) more im-portant, and these brethren were in-heriting it! …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  36. So since Christ is ministering in the original tabernacle and not the copy, He’s serving in a better place. So Paul’s question to them was, Why fel-lowship with priests whoserveinacopi-ed sanctuary when you can finally fel-lowship with Christ in the real thing? …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  37. To identify w/ those of the copy(when the real thing that it fore-shadowed had arrived) would be like living on the blueprint in-steadof inthe build-ing itself! So…   …who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely in-structed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

  38. Paul provided two evidences for the superiority of the New Covenant: 1.It’s administered by a superior priest—Jesus, and… 2.It’s administered from a superior place—Heaven. The remainder of this chapter is devot-ed to how the NT is founded on better promises.

  39. For the remainder of our time, how-ever, let’s talk a little about the tabernacle since Paul spends a lot of time on it in the next few chapters.

  40. As I said in connection with verse 2, the tabernacle or temple of the OT was a mere copy of the NT kingdom of God; however, as signified when the veil of the two-roomed tabernacle or temple came down at the death of Christ, the presence of God now fills the entirety of the tabernacle, not just the one small room previously known as the holy of holies.

  41. Just picture the now one-roomed, God-filled tabernacle as a spiritual building which encompasses God’s people in Heaven as well as His people on Earth—the entirety of His kingdom (cf. Eph. 1:10), bringing to mind the fulfillment of Christ’s model prayer about the coming kingdom & things being done on Earth as in Heaven.

  42. As Christians, as priests with Jesus as our High Priest, we’re in God’spresencenow(i.e. we’re face to face with Him now), meaning that, due to our Redeemer, our sin has been totally re-moved, reconciling us to our Creator. Hence the paradise of Eden—our relationship with God—has been restored in the second Adam.

  43. God’s Presence Before the Cross

  44. God’s Presence After the Cross Note However… 

  45. God’s Presence is still only INSIDE the tabernacle.

  46. Listen to God’s prophecy in Ezekiel 37: 26f: I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlast-ing covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forever-more. My tabernacle shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people. The nations also will know that I, the Lord, sanctify [them] when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore. Now…

  47. Listen to John in Revelation 21:3 & 7: After referring to the new heaven and earth (—the new administration, Isa. 65:17 &66:22)and the New Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven to Earth(—the full-ness of this administration or kingdom,Heb.12:22f), John recorded a voice from Heaven, saying…

  48. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God…. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I’ll be his God & he shall be My son. Now…

  49. Since Ezekiel 37 about a new covenant, obviously refers to the coming of God’s new kingdom in the first century, who would take it upon himself to deny that Revelation 21 refers to the fulfillment of the Ezekiel 37 prophecy? Not I! Why? Because the logical conclusion is that Revelation, which speaks profuse-ly about the tabernacle (by the way), is talking about the completed arrival of the new/eternal kingdom after Jeru-salem’s demise (found in 18—19). So…

  50. Here’s the point as regards the Hebrew brethren: Yes, they were being perse-cuted, but they were within about six years of seeing the fulfillment of every-thing they had been looking for as a people for 1,500 years! This is why Paul could say to them…
