  2. Digital Imaging Vocabulary • Digital - All computerized data is “digital,” meaning that it has been reduced to digits, or numbers. A computer transmits these numbers as electrical signals. • Digital Image - A digital image is stored in the computer as a set of digits representing colors, figures, tones, layout, etc. • Digital Photography - In digital photography, the camera contains no film, and the image does not have a physical output, such as a photograph. Instead, the image is stored as a digital file in the camera, and can be transferred to the computer and manipulated using digital imaging software

Digital Imaging Vocabulary • Digital Imaging Software - Also called “Graphics Programs.” Used to manipulate digital images by adjusting color, brightness, contrast, cropping, resizing, adding text, and applying filters. The five categories of graphics programs are paint programs, photo-manipulation software, drawing software, computer-aided design (CAD), and 3-D or animation software. Some of the most widely used graphics software packages are Adobe Photoshop (photo-manipulation), Adobe Illustrator (drawing), and PaintShop Pro (paint). • Filter - A special effect applied to a digital image. Many filters mimic the effects of special camera lenses.

  4. Digital Imaging Vocabulary • Digital Camera - A special camera that takes digital photographs. Rather than film, a digital camera contains flash memory to store the photos, or it may contain some other type of digital storage, such as a SmartMedia card, which can be inserted into a computer using a floppy disk converter. Most digital cameras use a cable attached to the computer to download images. • Nimh Batteries - Rechargeable batteries often used in digital cameras (nickel metal hydride batteries). Digital cameras, especially those with LCD screens, use up regular batteries quickly, and owners purchase Nimh batteries or an AC adapter instead.

Digital Imaging Vocabulary • LCD Screen - A small screen on the back or side of a digital camera that allows the user to review photos or take them without looking through the viewfinder. • Flash Memory - A memory chip used in digital cameras that stores the images until the user can transfer them to a computer, even when the camera is turned off. • Scanner - A scanning device that uses light reflection to convert any image into digital electronic form. Color scanners use filters to separate colors into values of red, green, and blue.

  6. Digital Imaging Vocabulary • FlatbedScanner - A scanner that has a flat glass surface on which photos, pages, or items are placed for scanning. Flatbed scanners offer the most versatility because any item can be scanned, including leaves, coins, and jewelry. • Sheet-FedScanner - A scanner that sits upright, and sheets of paper are fed through an opening in the scanner’s top or side, similar to a fax machine. Sheet-fed scanners are most often used in offices where the majority of scanned items are text documents. • OCR - Optical Character Recognition. Software to translate a scanned image into a text file. OCR software comes standard with many scanners.

  7. Digital Imaging Vocabulary • USB - A port type used by many scanners and digital cameras. A USB port is shaped like a narrow rectangle, and the camera or scanner cable plugs into the port. • Ink Jet Printer - A printer that uses CMYK colors of ink sprayed onto paper. Ink jet printer can produce sophisticated looking photo output on special glossy paper. Color ink jet printers are priced for home users beginning at $70. • Laser Printer - A printer that uses black or colored toner (dry powder), which is fused by heat onto the paper. Laser prints are smooth, slick, and water-safe. Color laser printer are priced outside the range of most home users, averaging $600 and up.

  8. Digital Imaging VocabularyPaper and Ink • Photo Paper / Photo Ink - Specialty paper and ink for photographic quality output from ink jet printers. Photo papers are glossy or semi-gloss. Photo ink cartridges produce brighter, more colorful images.

  9. Digital Imaging VocabularyBytes • Byte - The space required to store a single character or data. KB (Kilobyte) - 1,000 bytes, commonly referred to as “K” MB (Megabyte) - 1,000 kilobytes, commonly referred to as "Meg“ (1 million bytes) • Digital images are frequently much larger than text files. An average Microsoft Word text file is 20-30KB, while an average digital image may be a as large as 200-300KB for printing, and 100-200KB for emailing.

  10. Digital Imaging VocabularyFiles • File Sizes: Floppy Disk Size: 1039-1044K Zip Disk Size: 100-200MB CD Size: 500-800MB • File Extension - A dot and three letters at the end of a file name that specifies the type of file.
