NAB WAS ESTABLISHED TO EMPOWER THE BLIND THROUGH EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN BECOMING SELF SUFFICIENT • Description • Established in 1952 by Mangulal Jethalal Shah with a determination to establish NAB as the icon of unlimited service to the blind • It was registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950 • Is determined to establish NAB Is the largest non government voluntary organization in India • Has 19 state and 65 district level branches across India • NAB, India • Established & registered in 1979 under the Society Registration Act as the state branch of NAB, India • Initial scope of activities included education facility from preparatory level to senior secondary level of CBSE for the blind, a unit for the multi-handicapped and a unit for the deaf blind, a talking book library, a hostel for the blind children, and a computer training department • These have now expanded to prevention of blindness, organizing weekly eye camps, free cataract surgeries for the urban/ rural poor, providing education upto senior secondary level, computer training for the blind, a Braille press and a CD recording studio • NAB Delhi is now catering to the needs of ~500 visually impaired students • NAB, Delhi next

CURRENTLY NAB PROVIDES VARIOUS SERVICES THAT ENABLE THE VISUALLY HANDICAPPED TO INTEGRATE WITH DIGNITY IN THE MAINSTREAM • Residential Facilities • Hostel accommodation is provided to ~200 children free of cost • Services include shelter, boarding, clothing, medical facilities, transportation, school fees, uniforms etc. are also provided free of cost • Children of both preparatory and integrated education can avail of this facility • Other Facilities • Talking Book Library: Produces audio books in CDs / cassettes on topics that range from school and university textbooks to classics, fiction, poetry and short stories • Computer Center: With twenty computers in three different labs, it caters to the need of visually handicapped students. Its goal is to provide working knowledge of computers • Eye Camps: Organizes regular eye camps in collaboration with VENU eye institute. In 2004-2005, 580 cataract surgeries were done and 729 needy persons were given spectacles • Service for Elderly Blind: Runs a home for the aged blind who have been neglected by their families. Various services like lodging, clothing are provided free of cost. Other activities like yoga, martial arts, are also taught. NAB also pays them pension of Rs. 200 p.m. • Education • Preparatory unit: Children in the age group 5+ are admitted and provided training in mobility, daily living skills, reading and writing Braille. It currently has ~95 students • Integrated Education: After preparatory unit, visually handicapped children are admitted to various well-known English and Hindi medium schools (like DPS, TIS, St Mary’s, Mt Carmel, Kendriya Vidhyalaya etc). The effort of this program is to give the children an opportunity to study with the normal sighted children and bring them to mainstream of the society through education. • BLIND EMPOWERMENT • Multi-Handicapped Unit • Caters to the needs of the blind children with additional disabilities like hearing, speech, locomotor or mental impairment • Currently ~62 children are enrolled in this program next

INNOVATIONS @ NAB, DELHI • Description • NAB Delhi has conducted special training modules for trainings of other organizations • Computer trainer trainings for Blind welfare organization, Sikkim, NAB Haldwani, Vocational Rehabilation Center; Govt of India • Braille production training for JNU • Training of Trainers • An initiative has been taken for developing programming skills in blind persons. The objective of this program is that blind persons themselves should be capable of designing software required by them • Computer Programming Group • The e-text library was started in November 2003 with the help of ICEVI is making good progress • This library now has a collection of more than 2500 books. This has become the largest collection of materials in accessible format of books of Indian interest • College students are the biggest beneficiaries of this project who never had access to books before • E-text Library • NAB Delhi has entered into an agreement with Discipleship Center at Mukherjee Nagar to offer NAB training modules. This center was established to cater to the needs of students with blindness in North Delhi, who faced problems in reaching South Delhi (R.K.Puram) • NAB Delhi has also helped in the establishment of ‘Computer Reading & Training Center’ at Delhi University, NAB Chandigarh and NAB Haldwani • Establishment of Centers next

YOU CAN DO A NUMBER OF THINGS TO HELP US OVERCOME SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES • Description For Corporates: • Become a corporate sponsor for one/more of our facilities For Individuals: • Donate generously. Consider one/more of the following options: • Rs.2,400/- per annum or Rs.200/- per month for the pension to an elderly blind • Rs.3000/- per annum or Rs.250/- per month to adopt a blind elderly person at the Home of the Aged Blind • Rs.1000/- for sponsoring an eye operation with IOL • Rs.300/- for set of talking books for a blind student • Rs.400/- for a set of linen for a child for one year • Rs.6000/- per annum or Rs.500/- per month for sponsoring a middle and secondary level student • Rs.3000/- per annum or Rs.250/- per month for a primary level student’s education • Rs.9000/- per annum or Rs.750/- per month a sponsor a blind college going student • Rs.2,000 for sponsoring of meals for students in the hostel • Financial Assistance All donations to NAB are exempt from Income Tax under Sec 80 (G) of IT Act 1962 Dedicated volunteers are the backbone of NAB. As a volunteer you can: • Help raise awareness and funds • Give your voice for talking books recorded at talking book recording studios • Read books directly to students • Become writers for students appearing in examinations in the main-stream schools • Help children with their homework and tutorials participate in projects and programs like raised maps creation • Help in editing books for Braille printing on computers • Become a Volunteer next
