  1. Energy and Matter Understanding how Energy and Matter work together to give us the world we understand.

  2. What is energy? • In scientific terms the word energy is simply stated as the ability to do work or cause change. • Energy can not be created or destroyed. Energy is transferred or changed from one form to another.

  3. What are the four types of energy? • Thermal energy (Temperature) • Chemical energy (chemical bonds) • Electromagnetic energy (sunlight) • Electrical energy (energy from charged particles).

  4. Thermal Energy • Thermal energy- amount of energy stored in all of the particles in an object. (frequently described as either hot or cold) • Thermal energy always flows from warmer matter to cooler matter. • Thermal energy occurs in two different manners: 1) Endothermic- to take energy into an object or reaction (the melting of ice). 2) Exothermic- to release energy (combustion).

  5. Chemical Energy • Found in the chemical bonds between the atoms in the world around us. • Chemical energy is stored in the foods that we eat, the gas in the cars we drive, and in every cell in your body.

  6. Electromagnetic Energy • This is energy which travels through space as waves. • The visible light given off by the sun is an example of electromagnetic energy.

  7. Electromagnetic Scale

  8. Electrical Energy • Electrical energy is the energy of electrically charged particle moving from one place to another. • An example would be a lightning bolt.

  9. Transforming Energy • Transforming energy means energy is being transformed from one form to another. • An example which happen around us in our world is photosynthesis. • Water and carbon dioxide with sunlight produce oxygen and sugar.
