Validation Archive • We are currently in the process of building a Validation Archive (VALAR) for S-NPP CrIMSS validation • This archive will serve as a go-to validation archive for the life of the S-NPP CrIMSS mission and directly support development • The base archive is shaping up to consist of the following S-NPP matchup datasets… Nalli et al. - STAR Validation Archive

Datasets (1/3) • High-quality RAOB “anchor points” (dedicated sondes and reference sondes) analogous to NPROVS • Original native ASCII files • Reduced 100 effective layer RTA (i.e., “degraded”) • Merged ECMWF internal “Level 2” formatted files • CrIS/ATMS Granule “stamps” (i.e., 4-scan line granules within +/- 1 minute of overpass, ~500 km radius) • CrIS SDRs, geolocation (HDF5) • ATMS SDRs, TDRs, geolocation (HDF5) • CrIMSS IDPS operational EDRs and CCRs (HDF5) Nalli et al. - STAR Validation Archive

AIRS stamps (Eric?) matched up with the S-NPP dedicated RAOBs for Satellite EDR Intercomparisons • Dedicated RAOBs launched for S-NPP have good overlap with AIRS overpasses • (?) A Research Archive… • Forward-thinking,research flexibility • Re-Retrieval capability: Validation ↔ Development • EDR-RAOB matchups based on differing criteria • Allows for, but not constrained by, simple “nearest FOR” • Multiple matchups per RAOB can be obtained; trade-space between sample size, collocation distance, nearest accepted, etc. • Meteorological context in the vicinity of the RAOB, cloudiness/aerosols, precip, etc. • NPROVS+ linkage and standardization • Study of meteorologically interesting conditions and applications (e.g., Saharan dust impact study made possible by AEROSE) • Algorithm Intercomparisons; algorithm development • Dedicated Vaisala RS92 RAOBS can be further processed (GRUAN) to yield “reference dataset” • Tap into ancillary datasets for “retrieval dissections” (e.g, PMRF lidar, AEROSE sunphotometer, M-AERI, ozonesondes, etc.) Nalli et al. - STAR Validation Archive
