Traditional TranslationProblem - 7 • Genealogy Translation Problems: • Not translation from Modern Language to another Modern Language • 15th Century French is different from Modern French • As in example, Gothic was the language in the original document • No modern equivalent – Hence not supported by Google • Common contemporary words may have no modern equivalent • Abbreviations used then may be meaningless today • Handwriting may be difficult to interpret • Surnames may confuse the translation Hope your findings are in Latin  The Language is little changed except for punctuation

  30. Searching Across Languages - 1 • Problem: Search Terms entered in English will not necessarily provide hits on foreign URLs Say ancestor was a shoemaker in the old country • Solution: Perform search in country’s native language
