  2. Why do we monitor what we do in public?Why don’t we do everything that feels good?

  3. Individuals with autism spectrum and similar disorders appear not to notice others’ reactions to their behavior. ASD involves difficulty attending to social information.

  4. This is a developmental skill:Young children pick their noses, touch themselves in private places, and pass gas freely in front of others.

  5. Given that it is a developmental skill, it makes sense to : •Refrain from repetitive scolding if this has not worked. •Not rely on subtle, disapproving looks. •Try patience and teaching.

  6. Try using a scale to teach! • 5 = This is shocking to everyone. Do this in your own bedroom with the door closed! (masturbation) • 4 = This is upsetting to just about everyone. Do in private. (scratching private parts) • 3 = This is upsetting to many people, especially adults. (farting and excessive laughing) • 2 = This makes people uncomfortable. (nose picking) • 1 = This doesn’t really bother anyone. (humming very quietly) * Pick your battles!
