  3. Objectives • To recognize parts of a sentence and identify subject case • To correctly conjugate verbs to match subjects appropriately

  4. Review • My family has dinner together every night.

  5. Review • My family have different plans for vacation.

  6. Subject-Verb Agreement 1 Subjects and verbs must match accordingly. For example, I am NOT I are. • Uncountable nouns (like ??) use singular verbs • The milk is on the table. • “Each” and “every” use singular verbs • Each car has an engine. • Some words that end in –s are NOT plural and use singular verbs • Physics is easier to learn than English.

Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with an uncountablenoun,-s noun, or “each/every” • Bread is really good with labneh and olives. • Mathematics is a difficult subject. • Every class has a classroom. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^

  8. Subject-Verb Agreement 2 • Two simple subjects with “and” use plural verbs • Miss Heather and Becca Teacher are roommates. • “a number of” and “a group of” use plural verbs, nouns, and pronouns • A number of students are late to class today.

Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with an 2 simple subjects, or “a number of/a group of” • Sarah and Noufare students. • A group of cows are called a herd. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^

Subject-Verb Agreement 3 • When a phrase is between the verb and simple subject, it agrees with the simple subject • The students at TI schools are smart. • The dog with the spots is scratching his fleas. • “there + be” or “here + be” agree with the subject after the verb • There are many trees in the forest. • There is your bag.

Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with “there + be”/”here + be” or a phrase between the subject and verb • There is a bug on the chair. • The bug on the chair is purple. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^

  12. Subject-Verb Agreement 4 • “either…or”, “neither…not”, “or” the verb agrees with the closest subject • The two cars or big truck is 12,000$. • Collective nouns are singular when acting as one unit • The team is playing well together. • Collective nouns are plural when thought of as individuals or separate entities • The herd are dispersing on the field.

Speaking Practice • Everyone stands up • When you are ready raise your hand • When it is your turn please give a sentence with “either…or”, “neither…not”, “or” or a collective nouns • The pack of wolves is hungry. • Either the candy or chips are for your snack. • If you are correct you may sit down • If you can not think of anything, make something up… it is okay^^
