  3. 1. INSTN AS PART OF THE CEA

INSTN as part of the CEA • The French institute devoted to post-graduate education and professional training in nuclear science and technology within CEA, the French Atomic Energy Commission • The Institut National des Sciences et Techniques Nucléaires (INSTN) is an advanced education institution created within the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (CEA) in 1956 and placed under the joint supervision of the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Industry. • INSTN’s mission : • To spread CEA knowledge and know-how through the organisation of E & T : •  either education (mainly on a post graduate level) , • or continuous training (mainly for professionals) • INSTN also coordinates PhD programs across the CEA.

INSTN’s : students, trainees and professors • Students & trainees : • Students, engineers, medical doctors, pharmacists, from France or any other country, • Professionals from CEA, from French nuclear companies, from governmental agencies, school teachers,… • Foreign students or professionals. • Professors : • CEA researchers and experts, • French and foreign University teachers, • French and foreign engineers and experts from the industry, from the medical sector, from regulatory agencies.

Education within CEA-INSTN • At post graduate level: • Nuclear engineer degree, delivered by INSTN . • Medical physicist degree, delivered by INSTN. • Masters degree in cooperation with Universities or Engineering schools, • Specialities for medical doctors and pharmacists, At undergraduate level : professional “licence”, technician degrees (radiation protection).

CEA-INSTN with some figures • Education : • ~ 1000 teachers for around 700 students. • Continuous Professional training: • 647 sessions, for 7800 trainees and a total duration of 2900 days. • PhD and Post-doc : • around 1000 PhD and 300 post-docs • INSTN has 5 settlings, associated with main CEA sites : Saclay (headquarters), Cadarache, Grenoble, Marcoule & Cherbourg Staff : 113

  14. Need in specialists for Nuclear Industry • In France for Nuclear Industry the need of specialists in instrumentation till 2012 is about (OPPIEC study april 2008) • 200/year Ingineers • 120/year technicians

INSTN Program • In the field of basic training INSTN • has his own program included in GA course • In association with University of Provence accredits a Master focused on Instrumentation & Measurements for test devices in severe environments • In the field of vocational or continuous training INSTN develops special courses

  16. 3. GENIE ATOMIQUE ENGINEERING DEGREE

  17. « Génie Atomique » Engineering degree • No undergraduate education in nuclear engineering in France • A one year specialization course in nuclear engineering (Cadarache, Cherbourg, Saclay) • 7 months : courses, conferences, visits, exercices, laboratory sessions (> 550 hours) 55 ECTS • 5 months : Master thesis interships in research centres, universities, industry..25 ECTS

  22. First job up to 2007 a GA graduation +3 months . Around 25 employment proposals / month, . Principal employers : NEW : EDF employed more than 50% of 2008’s « Génie Atomique » graduates. Average over the last 3 years . Essentially : engineering expertise (60%), operation (20%),… . Average delay before 1st job : < 1 week(85% of the contracts signed internship). . Contract : 90 % as CDI. . In progress : international opportunities.

  26. Continuous Professional Training within CEA-INSTN • Trainees from CEA (40%), nuclear industry and SME (55%), international (few %) • 2700 days, 8000 people per year • Duration: a few days to several weeks • INSTN is certified ISO 9001 since 2001

Continuous Professional Training within CEA-INSTN • Mainly in technical, but some non-technical areas, • nuclear power plants, • materials, nuclear fuel cycle, • environment, health physics, • conventional and nuclear safety, • radioisotopes use in biology, molecular biology, • chemistry, radiochemistry, chemical analysis, • radioactivity, nuclear measurements, • project management, • other topics, including new energy technologies or initiation to nuclear energy for grammar school teachers...

Continuous Professional Training within CEA-INSTN • In the field of nuclear measurement and instrumentation, • PWR command control, • Beam detection, • Non destructive nuclear measurements , • gamma Spectrometry, • alpha Spectrometry, • Isotopic analysis (mass spectrometry) • radioactivity, nuclear measurements, • other topics, including new energy technologies or initiation to nuclear energy for grammar school teachers...

  29. However, Other secondary teaching establishments offer Nuclear Instrumentation’s trainings.
