PSAT/NMSQT What is the PSAT? • “Preliminary SAT” – Practice for SAT I • 2 Parts • Reading/Writing (160-760 range) • Math (160-760 range) = Total (320-1520 range) • Allows students to see strengths and weaknesses as they prepare for SAT Reasoning Test • Full report online – studentscores.collegeboard.org • Link to Khan Academy for practice recommendations – satpractice.org
Junior Year… Areas of Focus –Spring/Summer • Grades • Begin taking SAT or ACT and prep courses if necessary • Research colleges and visit campuses • Summer enrichment options

CSU/UC “A-G” SUBJECT Requirements • CP English 4 yrs • Math (Alg 1, Geom & Alg 2 or Math 101,201,301) 3 yrs, 4 recommended for UC • Lab Science (Life & Physical) 2 yrs, 3 recommended for UC • Social Science 2 yrs • Foreign Language 2 yrs, 3 recommended for UC • Visual/Performing Art 1 yr • CP Elective 1 yr Entrance Tests: SAT I or ACT SAT II no longer required • All courses must be UC certified (P) – College Prep • Approved SYHS A-G course list available on Guidance page under registration guide link
Admission Tests • (SAT I) Reasoning Test • Reading/Writing (200-800 scale) • Math (200-800 scale) • Essay (optional: 2-8 scale) • 4 free score reports per exam • ACT plus Writing (Composite max 36) • (SAT II) Subject Tests • No longer required for UC’s although may be recommended for some majors (Math, Engineering)). Students should also check with private/out-of-state schools
Which SAT scores will colleges use? • University of California (UC) • Best total score from single SAT • Require Essay • Send score to one school • California State Universities (CSU) • Best scores from separate test dates (Reading, M) • Do not use Essay score • CSU mentor code - 3594 • Private/Independent • Varies, check with each school
SPRING TEST DATES SAT March 9 (SAT Reasoning only) May 4 June 1 August 24 (note – not Spring but registration occurs in summer) ACT February 9 April 13 June 8 July 13 • Additional tests will be held in the fall • SAT Prep classes will be available prior to the March exams

THE COST OF COLLEGE • Living on campus: fees/tuition, books/supplies, room/board & miscellaneous per year • Community College $14,500 (living at home $3,100) • CSU $25,000 • UC $36,000 • PRIVATE/Out of State $50,000 and up Approximate averages, varies with each campus. Fees continue to rise annually.

Choosing Classes for Senior Year • Begin by meeting all graduation requirements • Know and understand college admissions requirements • All students must have full schedule (6 classes) • Some classes have OJT requirements (Restaurant, Sports Medicine) allowing students to have a free 5th or 6th period • Inquire about Allan Hancock College concurrent enrollment courses to receive college credit • Any online BYU courses must be completed this summer to fulfill UC subject requirements and be placed on our transcript
