What will my child be learning?Common Core StandardsLanguage Arts • Read and comprehend fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama • Read independently for 15-20 minutes daily • Determine fact versus opinion, draw conclusions, author’s purposeand text structure • Use syllables, suffixes, prefixes, and root words to decode words when reading • Read aloud with fluency and expression • Explain new concepts and information in their own words • Expand vocabulary to generate synonyms for overused words while communicating • Plan and make judgments about what to include in written products • Use capitalization, punctuation, details, and paragraphs to form written products • Spell words correctly using spelling patterns and sounds to represent all the sounds in a word • Use legible handwriting with correct letter formation and spacing

  5. Classroom and School Expectations • Students are expected to be on time to school so that they can have enough time to unpack, sharpen pencils, and be prepared for the school day. The instructional day is from 8:00 – 3:00. • Attendance p. 3 of Student/Parent Handbook in agenda • Students are expected to learn, have positive work-habits, exhibit good character, and have fun at school. • Students are expected to use kind words, listen, share ideas, encourage others, take turns, think before acting, accept the consequences of their behavior and do their best work. • Communication is essential and it is important that we all (teachers, parents and students) communicate with each other. • Students may have a water bottle to keep in the classroom. • Snacks brought to school should be nutritious so that learning and good behavior are supported. Please, no candy or junk food.

  6. Discipline Learning and safety are a priority in our classroom. Students are expected to do their best to follow class rules. Positive behavior will be recognized with: • Pawsitive awards given randomly • Monthly assembly recognizing respectful students • Praise from teachers/classmates • Classroom recognition • Special treats/prizes

Agendas • Students are expected to bring their agenda to school every day. • Please use the clear plastic pocket for notes and lunch money. • Specials schedule is located on the inside front cover of the agenda. • Please check the clear plastic pocket daily, clean it out and initial your child’s agenda under School Talk.

  9. Homework • Spelling units will begin September 8th. Tests will be given on Fridays. • Students will read from a Take-Home book at least 4 days a week. • Complete reading log with date, book and/or pages read. • Logs are to be signed by a parent to confirm the child read for 15-20 minutes. In addition, there will be 5-10 minutes for math, spelling review, or special projects. • Take-Home books will begin the week of Monday, September 22nd. Your child will be assigned a specific day of Mon., Tues., Wed., or Thurs. to turn his/her in with the Reading log. Each student will have individual books and also may consist of 1 chapter book or several leveled readers. I will check the reading log each week but I do understand that it may take longer than a week to read a chapter book. • Math homework (Superstars) will be given on Mondays and is due by the end of each week. This will begin the week of October 6th. • Your child is expected to turn in all assignments when they are due.

  10. Grading • Class work assignments will be graded using S (Satisfactory) I ( Improving) N (Needs Improvement) U (Unsatisfactory) • I often use a check mark with comments. Classwork is checked and given back for corrections if needed before sending home on Friday. • Tests will be graded using percentages.

  11. Parent – Teacher Communication Students are successful when there is open communication. • Monthly Newsletter will be sent home the beginning of each month. My webpage will also have my newsletters and important dates. • Progress reports (mid nine weeks) and report cards (quarterly) • Parent–teacher conferences • Please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone, email or notes. Cafeteria:p. 7 Student/Parent Handbook • Breakfast cost is now $1.15 and lunch cost is $2.40. • Supplemental items at breakfast and lunch. • Money: All lunch checks should be written for lunch payments only. Checks or cash should be placed in a sealed envelope with the student’s name (first and last), lunch number and teacher’s name written on it. • Parents can pay online at www.lunchprepay.com with the student’s lunch number. There is a charge for this.
