  3. …and the theory of the U.S.? Theory #4 • Social Contract Theory • “If men were angels, we wouldn’t need government.” • Everyone in society “signs a contract” agreeing to give up some freedoms and follow the rules of that society in exchange for government protection.

  4. In other words… We agree to give up just enough power (freedom) tothe government to maximize our protection (freedoms) from the government.

  5. What if either side “breaks the contract?” • If I break the law, I get punished. • If the government doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, we can kick them out of office.

  6. It’s as easy as that! Need to review it again? You can find it on pages 5-8 in your textbook. Couldn’t hurt!
