  3. Annotating • Critical reading: bringing knowledge, interests and experiences to text • Annotating: first act of writing in response • Annotating means identifying: • Purpose • Claim • Main idea(s) • Connections with ideas in other texts

  4. Annotating .. cont’d When annotating you answer these questions: • What arguments are responded to? • Is the issue significant? • Are the author’s claims true? • Is author’s evidence sufficient? • Is there an exception to author’s argument? • What would be a counterargument?

  5. Practice • Now read the text on p. 31 • Disregard annotation in margins • Think of: • Identify situation • Identify writer’s purpose • Identify author’s claims/thesis • Identify author’s evidence • Identify audience

  6. Hirsch’s Cultural Literacy • What is Hirsch’s thesis? • What is the situation/problem? • What is Hirsch’s purpose? • What are his claims? • What are the counterarguments? • How does he refute them?

  7. Assignment • Look at Barbara Ehrenreich’s article on p.47/48 • Identify the situation • Identify writer’s purpose • Identify author’s claims/thesis • Identify author’s evidence • Identify her audience

  8. Reading Assignment • Read “To Kill or not to Kill” by Scott Turrow
