  1. A New Economy C. 1920s Political Issues 1. “Return to Normalcy” with Warren G. Harding a. Ohio!! Wooohoooo!! 2. Wilson was finished (two term limit), Roosevelt had died a year earlier, no major political figures in the US! * Led to a new crop of politicians to emerge, like Harding! 3. Pro-business a. Reduced taxes on wealthy to spur business b. Introduced tariffs to protect farmers, increase production for businesses

  2. A New Economy 4. Scandal a. Teapot Dome Scandal 1. Oil reserves drilled by oil companies in exchange for bribes in Harding’s cabinet b. “Ohio Gang”- Harding’s friends who were running schemes and illegal operations out of the White House. 1. Harding never connected to the scandals, BUT, history has shown he probably knew about them. 5. Sudden Death- Harding dies after a speech in Seattle

  3. A New Economy 6. Calvin Coolidge a. Honest, respectable, was able to clean up after the Teapot Dome scandal b. Continued pro-business ideals of Harding c. Believed in strictly limited government 1. Barely passed any laws, budgets, etc. 2. Even vetoed a WWI benefits bill for soldiers!!! d. Did not seek reelection

  5. “Roaring ’20s” 2. Woman in the 1920s a. New women’s movement! 1. New opportunities for women: 19th Amendment Public Office Work- Nurses, teachers, domestic servants 2. Personal lives and family Changing perceptions of women’s responsibilities

  6. “Roaring ’20s” b. The “Flapper” 1. An independent, city women, who defied traditional dress, manners, and behavior. *defined by fashion! 2. Wore make-up, smoked cigarettes, went dancing, wore revealing clothes.
