Consciousness introduction
Phenomenal Consciousness • A state is phenomenally consciousiff there’s something it’s like to be in that state. • A quale is a phenomenal property.
Qualia and Physicalism • Physicalism: Any minimal physical duplicate of the actual world is a mental duplicate of the actual world. • Jackson’s Physicalism: “…all (correct) information is physical information.” (p.127)
The Knowledge Argument • Mary knows all the physical facts about the world prior to her release. • Mary learns something new upon her release. • If (1) and (2), then Physicalism is false. • [So] Physicalism is false.
The “Know How” Reply • The Ability Hypothesis: Knowing what it’s like is not propositional knowledge, but a kind of know how.
The “Know How” Reply • The Ability Hypothesis: Knowing what it’s like is not propositional knowledge, but a kind of know how. Someone knows what it’s like to see red iff he is able to imagine seeing red.
