  1. Forces change motion. Forces IAN pg. 73 • MAIN IDEAS • Force • Contact • Friction • Gravity • Balanced Force • Unbalanced Force • Net Force Objective: Define and identify types of FORCES using notes and collaboration.

  2. A. A force is a push or pull that causes a change in speed or direction (VELOCITY!) I. What is a “force”? 1. Therefore a FORCE is also a change in acceleration.

  3. B. Three types of forces: 1. Contact - touch Pushing/Pulling are examples of contact force

  4. 2. Gravity – attraction between two objects.

  5. 3. Friction – resistant force a. Galileo developed the idea of friction in his legendary thought experiment.

  6. Top ½ IAN pg. 72 Galileo's Famous Thought Experiment What would happen to a rolling ball if there was NO friction? What would happen to a falling feather if there was NO friction (air resistance)?

  7. II. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces A) Forces have both size and direction. (Vector) B) Forces that are equal and opposite are balanced forces. 1. NO MOTION! The object is not moving. The forces are balanced

  8. C) Net Force is shown using an arrow. Shows the result of interacting forces. Ex. Of Balanced and Unbalanced forces Tug of War

  9. D) Unbalanced Force are opposing vectors that are not equal. 1. MOTION! Ex. Of Balanced and Unbalanced forces Tug of War

  10. 1. List & illustrate (draw) examples of 2 Types of forces. 2. Use labeled VECTORS (arrows) indicating all forces. EXPLAIN weather your drawing is balanced or unbalanced. If there is a net force then add another vector showing the net force. Bottom ½ IAN pg. 72What is a Force?

  11. example FRICTION GRAVITY NET FORCE NET FORCE = 0 Unbalanced= velocity is greater than friction. Balanced = altitude of the orbit does not change.
