The Basics • Four to five feet long • Weighs about 110 lbs • Has a long, whipping tail • Life span is about 18 years • Moves on four legs • Near threatened – about 11,000 left • 7. Litter size is about 2
Habitat • Amazon Rainforest is in northern South America • Temperature averages about 80 degrees Fahrenheit and it doesn’t change much throughout the year • A lot of rain-up to 400 inches in a year • High humidity, especially at night
Physical Features • Paws are much like a cats, with long, sharp claws and nails • Canine teeth • Has long whiskers • Dark brown with a green shimmer • Excellent climber but can swim and run well • Males are larger than the females
Systems of the Body • Nervoussystem – there are sensors in its tail- it is prehensile • Circulatory system • Respiratory system • Digestive system • Reproductive system
Senses • Has good eyesight during the day – binocular vision. They have eyes in the front of their head • Good hearing – ears like a cat • Has a good sense of smell with a short snout
Food Chain • Jaguar is at the near top of the food chain, with the Anaconda snake being its only natural predator • The Danisten is just below the jaguar in the food chain with the jaguar and snakes the only predators • Eats mainly tree animals such as sloths • Its secondary food source are giant otters
Behavior • Travel in packs of 5 but they each individually climb trees • Babies stay with their mother for about 2 years before they go out on own • Females are the leaders because they have sharper claws
Symbiotic relationships • Symbiosis – a close interrelationship between 2 species • There is bacteria on its fur which gives it its green color • The color is green because the bacteria are photosynthetic
Relationship to other animals • Very much like a cat • Also has some doglike features • Danisten is in its own family, Danistidae. The genus is Danis. • The Danisten has evolved from the dog and cat families.
