  2. Who is the target audience & how is the genre shown? • The target audience for 1917 are adult males, as the main protagonist is a male and almost every character in this film is a male and there is a lot of death and violence as this is a war film, so it is designed for adults and a more mature audience than young children. The genre is shown in the opening of 1917 through the establishing shot of a field with flowers which tracks to a mid-shot of a soldier sleeping, which automatically shows the genre as any films with soldiers in military uniforms.

  3. Sound, Mise-En-Scene, Editing & Camera Work • Furthermore, the opening shot is very peaceful, with the two soldiers sleeping in a quiet field which could represent the calm before the storm of war and highlight how bad war can be through losing the things people take for granted, like quiet and sleep. There is diegetic sound in the form of dialogue between the two soldiers and someone of a higher rank but there is also non-diegetic sound in the very beginning as quiet, gentle music before slowly fading out as the higher ranking officer speaks to the soldiers. The characters we are introduced to are the two soldiers and a higher ranking officer, he is seen standing while the two soldiers are lying on the ground, which could represent how he is of a higher rank than them as he is higher up and looking down on them. The opening is edited to appear like it is filmed in one continuous shot, which could be used to give a sense of time and how long their journey is but also to make the audience less aware of the fact they are watching a film and instead are more immersed and think more about the meaning behind the film rather than the finer details of the film, like the way clips are stitched together.
