Do diabetic neuropathy patients benefit from balance training?

This study investigates the effects of balance exercises on sway indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a common complaint of diabetes, leading to balance impairments. The study examines 10 diabetic patients and 10 age-matched subjects for balance abilities using the Biodex Balance System. The experimental group undergoes 10 sessions of Biodex stability and rocker and wobble-board training with eyes open and closed. Results show improved balance indices in the experimental group after the intervention. The study concludes that balance training can enhance stability indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy, with an emphasis on closed-eye exercises.

  2. Aim • Investigate effects of balance exercises on sway indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy. • Relevance • Peripheral neuropathy is common complaint of diabetes. • Peripheral neural damage in turn will cause balance impairments in diabetic patients.

  3. Methods • Examined 10 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy and 10 nondisabled age-matched subjects for balance abilities. • Used Biodex Balance System. • Experimental group • Performed 10 sessions of Biodex stability and rocker and wobble-board training with eyes open and closed. • Retested after intervention.

  4. Results • Overall stability index and anterior-posterior stability index were significantly decreased after intervention in experimental group during different conditions. • Balance indices were significantly higher in experimental group than in control group before intervention. • No significant difference in indices between the two groups after intervention.

  5. Conclusions • Balance training can improve stability indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy. • These patients rely more on visual inputs, so training should emphasize closed-eye exercises.
