  1. § 6.5 Solving Applied Measurement Problems

  2. Problem Solving Steps • Understand the problem. • Read the problem carefully. • Draw a picture if this is helpful. • Fill in the Mathematics Blueprint so that you have the facts and a method of proceeding in this situation. • Solve and state the answer. • Perform the calculations. • State the answer, including the unit of measure. • Check. • Estimate the answer. • Compare the exact answer with the estimate to see if your answer is reasonable.

  3. Mathematics Blueprint for Problem Solving Gather the Facts What Am I Asked to Do? How Do I Proceed? Key Points to Remember Mathematics Blueprint The Mathematical Blueprint is simply a sheet of paper with four columns. Each column tells you something to do.

  4. Find the number of grams of raisins in the box. The box contains 14 ounces of raisins. Subtract 14 – 11 to find the ounces of raisins. Convert ounces to grams. Mathematics Blueprint Example: A box of raisin bran contains 14 ounces of cereal. Of this, 11 ounces are bran flakes and the rest is raisins. How many grams of raisins are in the box? Mathematics Blueprint for Problem Solving Gather the Facts What Am I Asked to Do? How Do I Proceed? Key Points to Remember To convert to grams, the ounces need to be in the denominator so it will cancel out. Example continues.

  5. Mathematics Blueprint A box of raisin bran contains 14 ounces of cereal. Of this, 11 ounces are bran flakes and the rest is raisins. How many grams of raisins are in the box? Ounces of raisins = 14 – 11 = 3 oz There are 85.05 grams of raisins in the box of raisin bran.

  6. Find the difference between the temperatures in Fahrenheit. Today: 33°C; last year: 94°F Convert 33°C to Fahrenheit. Find the difference between the answer and 94°F. Use the formula to convert to Fahrenheit. F = 1.8  C + 32 Mathematics Blueprint Example: The temperature in Cleveland, Ohio, is 33°C today. The temperature on this date last year was 94°F. What is the difference in degrees Fahrenheit between the temperature in Cleveland today and the temperature one year ago? Mathematics Blueprint for Problem Solving Gather the Facts What Am I Asked to Do? How Do I Proceed? Key Points to Remember Example continues.

  7. Mathematics Blueprint The temperature in Cleveland, Ohio, is 33°C today. The temperature on this date last year was 94°F. What is the difference in degrees Fahrenheit between the temperature in Cleveland today and the temperature one year ago? Last year: 33°C F = 1.8  33 + 32 = 59.4 + 32 = 91.4° Difference = 94° – 91.4° = 2.6° The difference is 2.6°F.
