Writing Seminar 6 - Revision Augustine Institute
Revision, A Necessary Evil • No one likes revising • But why? • Revision hurts • Two proposals • 1. Make revision a creative process • 2. Be willing to sacrifice the small stuff for the sake of the big goal.
Rest and Think • Napping, sleeping and creativity • Think like a reader • Take a day off • Think about the goals of your writing
Approaching Revision • Revising as you go? • Recursive writing • Avoid unproductive “tinkering.” • Find an approach that works for you.
Priorities in Revision Questions to ask yourself: • Have I responded to the assignment prompt? • Is my thesis strong, clear, and precise? • Is my argument strong and easy to follow? • Would reorganizing this paper improve it?
Think of Your Reader: • More questions: • Have I defined key terms? • Did I make explicit the important connections between ideas and steps in my reasoning? • Can the reader tell if I agree or disagree with the other opinions present in my paper?
Reverse Outlining • 1. Write down main point of each paragraph. • 2. Describe how the paragraph moves your argument forward. • 3. Consider the organization of the paper as a whole. • 4. Evaluate the coherence of each paragraph.
HOC’s and LOC’s • Higher Order concerns first • Assignment, Thesis, Argument, Introduction, Conclusion • Lower Order concerns • Transitions, Topic sentences, Evidence • Even Lower Order • Grammar, Punctuation, Footnotes, Formatting
Seeking Feedback • Consider when feedback will be helpful. • Peer readers – how to use them • Professor review • Responding to Feedback
Be Concise • Unnecessary words • Why is brevity difficult?
Proofreading • Check the following: • Punctuation • Spelling (Use but don’t rely completely on spellcheck.) • Missing/extra words • Weird spaces and fonts.
