  4. Apollo • God of music, healing, light and truth • Son of Zeus and Leto • Twin to Artemis • Called the Archer • Instrument – lyre • Tree – laurel • Bird – crow • Delphi oracle

  5. Artemis • Goddess of chastity , the hunt, the moon, and natural environment • Twin to Apollo • Protector of young • Tree – cypress • Animal – all, especially the deer • Also a talented archer.

  6. Hades • Brother to Zeus • God of the Underworld, wealth • Helmet made by Hephaestus to make him invisible • Associated with Cerebus, a three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld. • Concerned with growing the population of his realm.

  7. DEMETER • Goddess of corn, grain, the harvest, Earth and agriculture • Sister to Zeus • Associated with the seasons • Sacred items include: livestock, agricultural products, poppy, narcissus, and the crane.

  8. ARES • God of the physical, violent aspect of war. • Son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by both. • Sacred bird – vulture • Sacred animal – dog • Actually a coward when hurt.

  9. APHRODITE • Goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure. • Married to Hephaestus • Most beautiful of the goddesses • Sacred plant – myrtle • Sacred animal – horse • Sacred birds – doves, sparrows, and swans

  11. Hermes • Trickster of the gods • Son of Zeus • Messenger of the gods • God of transitions, boundaries, and travellers • Things sacred to him include: rooster, tortoise, goat, and palm tree • Symbols include winged sandals and hat, and a herald’s staff

  12. Athena • Goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature • Daughter of Zeus, no mother • Goddess of cities Favourites of Athena include: the olive tree, owls, and the city of Athens
