  1. Motet By Juliette Farrell

  2. what was the music like? • It was normally a religious work but it could be non religious. • It was a vocal composition. • The early motets had a slow vocal part with two or three faster vocal parts singing above. • Later motets had up to six separate vocal parts singing at once. • Can be unaccompanied or instruments could double vocal parts.

  3. Concepts to look out for in motets • Polyphony - more than one musical line weaving with the others. • Imitation - melody immediately copied after at a higher or lower pitch. • Counterpoint - a separate melody played with harmony to the other.

  4. Main Composers Brahms 7/05/1833 3/04/1897 Bach 31/03/1685 28/071750 Mozart 27/01/1756 5/12/1791

  5. Listen to some examples • This example shows two motets you can hear a basic accompaniment in parts and there is a polyphonic feel you can hear throughout. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLD7FiHaTqE

  6. Another example • You can see the singer in this one and the instruments accompanying them. This motet is by Bach and is called “Komm, jesu, komm.” which in English means come Jesus come. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJospfuv5po&feature=relmfu
