Area of Focus • ACADEMIC REVIEWS • _ Manage process for review of departments, graduate programs, centers and other programs • Scheduling • Forming review teams • Initiating and serving as consultant for department self-studies • Arranging agendas • Managing logistics of site visits School of Medicine, Office of Faculty Affairs

Area of Focus • FACULTY DEVELOPMENT • Develop and maintain an orientation program for new faculty members • Work with Department Chairs, Center and Institute Directors, the Academy of Master Teachers, the Office of Educational development, the Academy of Research Mentors, to assure appropriate mentoring of junior faculty members • Oversee the selection of faculty members to participate in special faculty development opportunities (e.g. ELAM, SELAM, other AAMC programs) • Work with the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and/or SOM groups to oversee the selection of institutional nominees for a variety of awards and honors School of Medicine, Office of Faculty Affairs

Area of Focus • FACULTY EVALUATION _Manage the process for period evaluation of tenured faculty (“post-tenure review”) • Communications with Departments • Tracking completion of Reviews • Coordinating the appropriate management of negative reviews • Oversight of reporting to UT system • Consultation with departments and faculty members as needed _ Along with Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, serve an ex officio member of the SOM APT Committee _ Be a resource for the APT process for faculty and Departmental Chairs School of Medicine, Office of Faculty Affairs

  5. Area of Focus • OTHER _Manage the process of elections to SOM committees and Faculty Senate _Attend monthly Faculty Senate meetings _Contribute to accreditation process within the SOM and UTMB with regard to faculty issues School of Medicine, Office of Faculty Affairs

Work in Progress • Identifying individual research faculty’s contributions towards publishing, mentoring, submitting research proposals, service on committees • Work with department chairs to develop a mentoring and development plan for all investigators who are 0.5 FTE in research or greater • The plan will be a part of every offer extended to a new faculty member with a unified approach to mentoring and faculty development that minimizes current fragmentation and improves coordination of activities across the institution • Seeking input and exploring the financial feasibility of hiring a grant editor(s) to include an assessment of the need and projected return on investment

  7. Work in Progress • Ensuring that an internal review, grant application review committee exists for every faculty member, either in their own department or as a committee that extends across departments • Increase the number of competitive federal grant applications submitted • Increase the number of publications with UTMB faculty as first or last author in journals with an impact factor of at least 4
