Preface … • Originated from Australia in 1948 • Singapore is the 1st in Asian venture in 1994 • Sportsgirl’s attraction for Robinsons were the regular new ranges and price structure. • Sportsgirl launched first shops in Centrepoint’s Robinsons deparment store and JL specialist’s Shopping Centre in June. • 3rd larger shop at Scotts Shopping centre on July 29 ‘94. • Expansion of 5th shop in Bishan’s Junction 8 despite company’s flat profits and slow market in ’96 • Clearance sale of 30% in all 8 shops • Closure of Sportsgirl shops by ’99 • 104 stores left in Australia

  14. Expansion should be strategize with some profits and during the reviving of the economy. This will prevent stores from being closed down • target the mass market by focusing on the needs of customers • have better buying strategies • heavy turnover of in-store staff to ensure the right people were serving customers

  17. Preface… • Launched its first overseas store in Hong Kong in 1960 • Daimaru opened its first in Singapore in 1983 • Daimaru had 3 outlets in Singapore • Daimaru left Singapore in 2003. • After Daimaru closed down in Singapore, it meant a complete withdrawal in overseas.

  19. This was due to the weight of their accumulated losses • Pricing and also the target consumers • Strong and big competitors

  21. They should have concentrated on a store first before spreading out to open more • Target the mass market by focusing on the needs of customers • Have better sales strategy • Revamp stores to keep them new and attractive to meet the needs of customers and local markets.
