  2. ORGANIK ORGANIK started out as a nursery providing seedling plants to farmers.

  4. ORGANIK For years vegetable growing has been associated with Dalat.

  5. ORGANIK The climate is suited to growing “Western” style vegetables.

  6. ORGANIK Dr. Nguyen Ba Hung is a key player in developing Dalat’s vegetable industry.

  7. ORGANIK In 1997 he researched sustainable, organic vegetable production.

  8. ORGANIK He concluded, “Farmers need improved seedling varieties.”

  9. ORGANIK So, he set up nurseries.

  10. ORGANIK Now farmers could buy new tomato, cabbage, strawberry and potato seedlings.

  11. ORGANIK Then foreign growers ordered wasabi, cabbage and spinach seedlings.

  12. ORGANIK Later this nursery called “Hung Thien” began growing, processing and exporting romaine lettuce.

  13. ORGANIK Thirteen containers of Romaine Hearts were shipped to Sogo, in Taiwan.

  14. ORGANIK Hung Thien now had … • a nursery • contracted • growing land • but no processing facility

  15. ORGANIK So, in late 2004, a small but modern processing centre was built.

  16. ORGANIK It included: a receiving area a sanitized processing area a vacuum cooling unit capable of handling 5 T of product / day and a 6 tonne cold storage room

  17. ORGANIK The new facility enabled “Hung Thien”, now known as, ORGANIK, to develop a presence in the domestic market.

  18. ORGANIK By late 2004 ORGANIK was supplying: Vietnam’s 5 star hotels from its 85 item product range. Saigon’s expatriate community via a “Home Delivery Service”.

  19. ORGANIK ORGANIK guaranteed the safety of its vegetables.

  20. ORGANIK To minimize residues biological fertilizers were used.

  21. ORGANIK Sticky yellow bug catchers were put in the fields. Insect repelling flowers were planted at the edge of fields.

  22. ORGANIK The customers deserved quality products. But …  how could quality be achieved consistently?  how could it be measured?

  23. ORGANIK The International Marketing Organization (IMO) was asked to provide ORGANIK with a “quality” process.

  24. ORGANIK IMO inspectors, from outside Vietnam, visited ORGANIK “ in June, 2005.

  25. ORGANIK In August of 2005 ORGANIK was awarded a “EUREPGAP Certificate.” This was the first EUREPGAP Certificate issued to a growing/processing company in Vietnam.

  26. ORGANIK ORGANIK has recently bought 4 hectares of growing land.

  27. ORGANIK The farm will: • help ORGANIK respond to the increasing demand for high value, organic vegetables. • become a learning centre where students can see modern agricultural practices in action. • act as a model for other farmers in Dalat.

  30. ORGANIK There is the Director, Dr. Hung, with a PhD in plant genetics and breeding improvement from France. There is also his wife, the Financial and Processing Manager, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phuong.

  31. ORGANIK There is, the Foreign Relations and Seed Purchasing Manager, Mr. John Fast. As well as, the Home Delivery Manager, Mrs. Arlene Fast.

  33. ORGANIK We’re introducing a new product series. Certified organic products will be grown on the new farm.
