  2. Keele University www.keele.ac.uk A campus-based university located in the West Midlands of England, offering dual-honours degrees and research in science, social science and humanities. Founded as a University College in 1949, it received its Royal Charter in 1962.

Research Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine (ISTM) A multidisciplinary Institute formed in 2006 to underpin the new Medical School established between Keele and Manchester Universities Keele Medical School School of Life Sciences ISTM brings together dispersed clinical and laboratory-based researchers from different departments and cultures. University Hospital of North Staffordshire (PFI development) Guy Hilton Research Centre RJ&AH Orthopaedic Hospital

Facilitating Biomedical Research ISTM brings together clinicians and bio-scientists across four hospital sites and the Keele campus: • School of Medicine • School of Pharmacy • School of Health & Rehabilitation • School of Life Sciences • School of Computing & Mathematics • School of Chemistry & Physics • University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent • The Haywood Hospital, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent • Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry • Leighton Hospital, Crewe ISTM Away Day 2012

ISTM - Current Staff • 88 full members: • Professors: 27 • Readers, Senior Lecturers, Clinical Lecturers: 40 • Lecturers: 18 • Research Fellows: 3 • >25 NHS clinicians run clinical trials through ISTM • 9 affiliated members from other Keele RI’s • Key chair appointments of senior clinical/non clinical academics to expand capacity • A large percentage of career-young researchers in the Medical and Pharmacy Schools

  8. ISTM – Scientific themes2012 review of groupings underway • Bioengineering & Therapeutics • Clinical & Diagnostic Science • Infection, Inflammation & Immunity (incorporating CAEP, the Centre for Applied Entomology & Parasitology) • Neuroscience & Human Metabolism

  9. Bioengineering & Therapeutics ISTM is a European Centre of Excellence in Tissue Engineering. Theme leaders: Prof Alicia El Haj Prof James Richardson Cellular phenomena and cellular therapies for clinical applications e.g. Autologous treatments, e.g. knee cartilage Surgical repair, e.g. biomagnetic cell targeting Magnetism and magnetic materials techniques for biomedical applications, e.g. in the brain.

Clinical & Diagnostic Science Theme leaders: Prof Gwyn Williams Prof Simon Davies Interaction between bioscientists, engineers, physicists, chemists and clinicians e.g. • Molecular epidemiology and tumorigenesis • Apoptosis (programmed cell death) • Structural biology of the innate immune response • Rheumatic and inflammatory diseases • Breath analysis – monitoring and diagnosis ISTM has a dedicated Human Genomics facility

Infection, Inflammation & Immunity Incorporating the Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology (CAEP) Theme leader: Prof Gordon Hamilton Molecular approaches to control of insect vector-borne disease • Malaria, mosquitoes and man • Leishmania, sandflies and man • Chemical ecology of insect communication • Fish parasitology & comparative immunology CAEP is an internationally recognised centre with links to North and South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

Neuroscience & Human Metabolism Theme leaders: Dr David Furness Prof Clive Hawkins Multidisciplinary studies of neuroscience, neurological and metabolic disorders • Cellular and tissue engineering to restore damaged areas of the nervous system • Clinical studies of multiple sclerosis and stroke • Sensory neurobiology and plasticity • Cardiovascular disease and its treatment

ISTM - Activity Metrics • Manages ~185 live research grants and trials • Receives £5m / year income, incl £3.8m in grants • Applies for ~150 new research grants / year • Outputs ~280 peer-reviewed publications / year • RAE2008: 90% of staff rated of international quality in UoA 25 General Engineering • REF2014: UoA 15 General Engineering UoA 3 Allied Health Professions UoA 5 Biological Sciences Potentially 50-60 academics submitted
