Update on RDA & cataloguing standards developments

This update provides information on the latest developments in RDA (Resource Description and Access) and cataloguing standards. It covers upcoming proposals for MARC, inclusion of Non-Roman script data in authority records, current proposals for DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification), the Genre/Form project for LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), and the names of persons project by IFLA. It also highlights what RDA is and isn't, the tentative timeline for implementation, and resources for learning more about RDA.

What RDA is • A new standard to replace AACR • Designed for the digital world • Instructions will be a Web tool • Instructions cover description of digital resources • Resulting records to be used in web environment • Broader scope • Includes ‘authorities’ • Better coverage of resource types • Online resources, visual resources

  4. What RDA isn’t • Not a replacement for MARC21 or the ILMS • Not an encoding standard or library system • Not a panacea for every ill afflicting the catalogue, but … • It will enable improved navigation of the catalogue and improved catalogue displays (more organised, less cluttered) • Not (necessarily) simplified cataloguing, but .. • It will offer the potential of improved efficiency of data creation & maintenance
