What is Support Care? • Short-term, preventative (foster) care to support • families in crisis with a view to avoiding a child or young • person being taken into care long-term • Time limited; typically no longer than one night or a • couple of weekends a month over 6-9 month period • Part of a package of intensive, preventative support • Aimed at reducing number of children looked after

  4. Role/example of activities • The Fostering Network • Support Care Project 2010-2011 • - 3 regional forums (Hull, Milton Keynes, Cardiff) • 6 e-newsletters • presentations to forums (eg. Family Group Conferencing, Fostering Managers) • work with panels • facilitating information sharing between providers • free consultancy visits • case study bank • post adoption support • pre-approval training • research into Support Care • Support for carers changing their role • Lobbying

Aims of today • Learn how “Support Breaks Swansea” • has developed a successful, sustainable support care service • Hear a support carer talk about her experience working with children and young people • Consider whether there is an alternative to “sharp, sudden and out of the blue”? endings - findings from Cardiff University PhD Research • Find out about Big Lottery “Strengthening Families” project 2011-2014 • Hear some key findings from the England/Wales Support Care survey

  7. “Strengthening Families” Big Lottery Fund project 2011-2014 in Wales KEY ACTIVITIES Establish 5 new support care programmes in Wales by 2014 Produce 4 newsletters/year Presentations to Community Groups Awareness raising for panels Train 50+ support carers Produce fact sheets Regular forums (at least 3/year) Media training courses Case study bank 5 carer support groups
