  2. Basic Scurvy Info • Scurvy is a disease resulting from a deficiency of Vitamin C. • It leads to the formation of spots on skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from the mucous membranes. • Scurvy was at one time common among sailors, pirates, and other aboard ships on long sea voyages.

Interesting Facts • British ships took kraut on voyages to prevent scurvy due to its ability to keep well without refrigeration. • Herbal cures for scurvy have been known in many native cultures since prehistory. • Like humans, other primates, fruit bats, and guinea pigs require vitamin C in their diets to prevent scurvy.

  4. How to Prevent Scurvy • Take in 30mg of Vitamin C a day. • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. • Eat fresh food all the time. • Fruit is the best source of vitamin C such as, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, papaya.. etc. • Veggies high in vitamin C include: bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, and spinach. One week MEAL plan • Monday: Breakfast – 2 eggs, 2 strips bacon, 2 pieces toast, orange juice. • Lunch – Ham and Cheese sandwich, 1 can tomato soup, milk. • Dinner - Individual spicy perogy pizza from Boston Pizza, beer. Tuesday: Breakfast – Bowl of honey nut cheerios, apple juice. • Lunch – Grilled cheese sandwich, veggies and dip, fruit punch. • Dinner – 1 baked potato with melted cheese and bacon bits, caesar salad, soda pop. • Wednesday: Breakfast - Sausage and egger from MacDonald's, medium coffee with 1 sugar 1 cream. • Lunch – 5 potato and cheese perogies, greek salad, white rice with soy sauce, Dinner – 6” pizza sub with lettuce, cheese, tomato, pickles, salt and pepper (from subway) Thursday: Breakfast – 2 strawberry toaster strudels, freshly squeezed orange juice. Lunch – Campbell's chunky soup, 2 pieces of toast, Canada crackers, grape drink. Dinner – 3 Chicken strips, 2 cups mashed potatoes, 1 cup peas, coffee w/ sugar, water. Friday: Breakfast -
