  2. Aircraft Cargo Hold Burn-trough Protection • Here shown a class “C” cargo compartment according to FAR25.857(c) • Air-tighten Lining acc. to FAR 25.365(e) • Burn-through requirement acc. to FAR 25.855(c). Test 1020°C for 5 minutes, Heat flux 90 KW/m2 – 2 Gallon Burner Test. • Design for security acc. to AC25.856-2A. Burner Test: 6 Gallon Test, 1100°C for 4 minutes, Heat flux 180KW/m2 Example taken from Airbus Aircraft in FRA/GE (Typ.) 1 2 • Test performed according to EASA and FAA requirements as: • EASA CS25.855(c) and FAR 25.855(c), appendix F – Part III 3 4 Burn-through test according to AC25.856-2. Certified first on Airbus aircraft “A330/A340” refer to FAA safety Finding-Issue Paper IP CI-6 signed at stage 4 Prepared by BARO-Agentur UG Document No: 0010-006-01- 03 Draft

  3. Integrative Passive Fire Protection Architecture • Objective: • Improvement of overall cargo hold fire protection architecturetaking into account opportunities mainly given by new technologies (fuel cell and OBIGGS) and new materials (e.g. intumescent paint) • Topic Description: • Analyze new cargo hold classification, impact of potential new restrictions regarding transportation of HAZMAT and opportunities given by new burn-through resistant materials • Investigate synergistic effects between improved ULDs (with respect to burn-through characteristics) in combination with an improved passive fire protection system • Analyze potential benefits if combining container tracking, container monitoring, improved lining and improved ULDs (burn-through and explosion proof) to create new business cases for airlines • Benefits: • Weight reduction • Offer of special services, e.g. transportation of “special goods” • Improved lining architecture within cargo compartment • Partners: • SVT, TAG-Textile Supplier, DLR Picture to illustrate potential of new textiles and materials LD3 ULD under Test. After 2 hours and temperature above 1000°C, no burn-through. After massive cut outs, burn-through were possible (see picture above) Prepared by BARO-Agentur UG Document No: 0010-006-01- 03 Draft

  4. INTUMESCENT COATINGS-PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION • TECHNOLOGY • Utilization of intumescent materials for improving the fire resistance (burn-through) criteria's of cargo holds. • Intumescent materials form a non-burnable protective layer when exposed to flames or heat, which protects the covered material from heat intake by thermal insulation • Intumescent materials belong to passive fire protection measures, which are intended to contain a fire in the cargo compartment fire of origin, thus limiting the speed of fire and preventing the fire from spreading • BENEFITS • New design concept for cargo hold lining structure leading to a lightweight and less complex design, thus reducing weight and lead time. • New cargo hold fire suppression concept allowing to optimize the weight of cargo hold fire suppression system • Estimated weight savings: • Cargo hold lining ca. 10 to 25 Kg • Cargo hold fire suppression system: ca. 25 Kg • Detailed analysis required to qualify weight savings • APPROACH • Utilization of intumescent materials on cargo hold systems and equipment's to enhance the fire penetration resistance (burn-through) of cargo hold elements (cargo hold liner, ball mats, etc. • ACTIONS • Ensure protection concepts (Patent) • Harmonisation with airworthiness authorities • Definition of certification basis, like same safety finding as done particular on cargo hold (ref to FAA IP CI´s • Elaboration of concepts; specification of technical applications • Establish project team and provide funding • Perform trade-off study to quantify and identify: • Weight benefits • Additional applications; other fields of application • Possible Show stopper • Certification constraints Prepared by BARO-Agentur UG Document No: 0010-006-01- 03 Draft

  5. Integrative Passive Fire Protection Architecture • LD3 burn tests at Test Facility Trauen/Graßberg/Germany. • The InnoTec Data presenter can show few pictures about the tests performed at the village “Trauen” / north of Germany – DLR Test Center. • Figures gives some ideas about the tested materials and how they have withstand the fire attack inside the cargo container until burn through. Prepared by BARO-Agentur UG Document No: 0010-006-01- 03 Draft

  6. Necessary next Steps for InnoTec Aviation: • ULD – Container Requirements • Canvas (protection cover) Requirements (SIOEN) • Intumescent Paint (part of Cover) used as a fire barrier • FAA – MPS (DOT/FAA/AR-TN05/20, second update) • Cover must be equipped with an electrically conductive flexible mesh to detect surface damage • Cover must withstand short-circuit (short-circuit protected) • Cover must withstand the rollable and foldable criteria • Cover must withstand external and internal fire event (Burn-through)for more than 5 hours due to rescue activities – TBC. International Authorities are in the Team identifying the safety rules. • Cover durability - min 10 Years • Zip fastening elements (part of design criteria) • Technical Specification, for manufacturer • Technical Specification for secondary structure – status in work • Technical Specification for the ULD Base plate – status in work • Technical Specification for the shock damping of ULD baseplate – in work • Etc.
