  3. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Robert McCall was born.

  4. Actually, he was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1919.

  5. As a boy, he loved things that fly. He liked to look through a telescope at moon craters and he thought it was awesome!

  6. He loved aircrafts and adventure stories and would sketch pictures to illustrate them in his spare time.

  7. After high school, he won a scholarship to Art College and then worked at LIFE Magazine illustrating for stories about futuristic space travel.

  8. Afterwards, he was asked by NASA to illustrate a history of their efforts. Air and space travel has been the focus of McCall’s work for 40 years. What does NASA stand for?

  9. National Aeronautics and Space Agency

  10. McCall was famous for his artwork and knowledge of space travel. He was asked to do a series of postage stamps regarding America’s space history.

  11. McCall also worked as a consultant on the movies 2001: ASpace Odysseyand Star Trek. This poster inspired Star Wars creators Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

  12. In 1970, McCall moved to Arizona with his wife, Louise, who is also an artist. They still live in Paradise Valley. In fact, many of his futuristic paintings are set in the Arizona Desert. “Grand Canyon Arrival” “Floating City Over The Arizona Desert”

  13. Along with air and space flight, McCall also paints the future as he imagines it. Much of his art, especially the murals, are “futurescapes”. “Construction Site on Earth Orbit” “Visitation”

  14. “Futurescapes” are large pictures that reflect human beings building a clean, beautiful new world with the help of futuristic technology. “City of Skyscrapers” “Moonlit World”

  18. Challenger Space Center(here in Arizona) This museum features over 400 works of art by Robert McCall.

  19. Smithsonian Air and Space Museum

  20. Cosmic Birth is a whimsical title for a smaller spacecraft dropping from a larger ship. The landscape of this artwork was inspired by a trip McCall took to Canyon De Chelly (Shea) in Northern Arizona.
