The Project • The Science Fair Project is completed AT HOME, with teacher guidance • Parents may assist students with the assignments • The Science Fair Project receives its own letter grade on the report card • The final project will be due and collected on Tuesday, Dec. 16th which means there is a little over 2 ½ months to get the project finished.

  3. Mrs. LeBlanc’s Responsibilities • Give detailed assignment sheets • Grade and return quickly with feedback (within reason) • Post all informative papers on my website • Stay on track with my Timeline • Communicate with Classroom teachers and parents when needed

  4. Student Responsibilities • Complete work with your best effort • Ask questions when you don’t understand • Complete assignments on time – don’t wait until the last minute • Have fun!

  5. PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES Please try to: • Follow up with your child(ren) regarding the completion of all assignments • Check the Science Fair Packet and Timeline frequently • Read all Science Fair letters that are sent home

Science Fair Topic Selection Students will choose one project to complete: SCIENCE INQUIRY PROJECT ORRUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE Students will also choose to work: INDIVIDUALLY OR WITH A PARTNER*** ***For students working with a partner, each student must have a parent/guardian signature. Each student in a partnership will receive the same final grade.

  8. NEXT GENERATIONSCIENCE STANDARDS A RUBE GOLDBERG PROJECT ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY, REDESIGNING, AND PROBLEM SOLVING. THESE ARE IMPORTANT CHALLENGES THAT BUILD STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH) SKILLS

  9. THINK MOUSETRAP DO YOU REMEMBER THE MOUSETRAP GAME? THAT IS A RUBE GOLDBERG! IT HAS A TASK, IT USES SIMPLE MACHINES AND IT INCLUDES SEVERAL DIFFERENT EVENTS!

  10. RULES AND REQUIREMENTS STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A NOTEBOOK (JUST LIKE THE TRADITIONAL PROJECT 2.PROOF OF THE PROJECT MAY BE A VIDEO SENT TO THE SCIENCE TEACHER AND/OR BRING THE PROJECT IN TO SHARE.

  11. MORE RULES AND REQUIREMENTS 3. AT LEAST 3 SIMPLE MACHINES MUST BE INCLUDED 4. AT LEAST 6 DIFFERENT EVENTS MUST BE INCLUDED 5. MAXIMUM SIZE IS 3 FEET WIDE, 1.5 FEET DEEP AND 5 FEET HIGH

  12. WHERE TO BEGIN? BEGIN WITH PICKING A TASK THAT YOU WANT YOUR RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE TO ACCOMPLISH. HERE YOU SEE THAT THE SIMPLE TASK IS TO WAKE THE SLEEPING PERSON – A HOME MADE ALARM CLOCK!

  13. GATHER YOUR MATERIALS AND DO SOME RESEARCH YOU’LL WANT TO BE SURE TO HAVE 3 SIMPLE MACHINES AND YOU WILL NEED TO RESEARCH SIMPLE MACHINES AND ENERGY.

  14. CREATE AND REDESIGN! THE DEMANDING PART ABOUT CREATING RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINES IS THE REDESIGNING WHEN IT DOESN’T WORK. INVENTORS, SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, AND ARTISTS ALL MUST BE PATIENT!

Rube Goldberg Grading Abstract-1-2 paragraph descriptive overview of project Identifying Task for the Rube Goldberg Machine Background Research (Simple Machines, Kinetic/Potential Energy Numbered Sketch with Description for each step 3 or more simple machines Minimum of 6 Unique Events or Actions Problem Solving Log (Pictures/Video Recommended) Reflection/Conclusion/summary Documented Success (Working Model or Video)

  16. GOOD LUCK! Have fun? THIS PROJECT OPTION IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. THOSE NOT INTERESTED IN OUR NEW PILOT PROGRAM OPTION ARE ENCOURAGED TO CHOOSE THE TRADITIONAL OPTION

  17. SCIENCE INQUIRYA Traditional Science Fair Project

  18. The Science Inquiry Project provides an opportunity to be scientifically creative while demonstrating an understanding of the scientific method.

  19. Investigative Question • Question must have and independent and dependent variable. • How does ______ affect ________? • What is the affect of ____ on ____?

  20. Background Research • A summary of all of the information you found about the science behind your question • Make sure that this section is in your own words and that you use quotation marks when you don’t use your own words.

  21. Hypothesis • What do you predict will happen? Be specific. • List information from your background research to explain your prediction.

  22. Materials Needs to include all items used and how much of each

  23. Procedures Written in a NUMBERED format in sequential order

  24. Observations • Quantitative = Quantities or numbers (data) • Qualitative = Qualities or observations using the 5 senses

  25. Data Tables It’s best to type up a blank data table before you do your experiment to record results, and then type in the results once you’re done.

  26. Data Tables • Your project may have one or more data tables that show an average of 5 trials. • This shows the average amount of evaporation from each liquid. • Data Table should show proof of metric measurement

  28. Conclusion Refer to all hand-outs from lab to be sure you include all parts of the conclusion

  29. Conclusion It tells the story of your whole project.

  30. Appendices • All graded work and Rough Drafts • Handwritten Raw data • Notes • Official forms, if needed • Signatures of participants, if needed

  31. Backboard Everyone will receive a free-standing backboard from Mrs. LeBlanc. They may be used as an advertisement for your project or they may serve as a backdrop for a display.
