  1. The Mis-Education of the Negro Using lessons from the past to address our present and improve our future Original presentation – 10 March 2011, NBGSA ConferenceUpdated – 5 April 2013 www.route283east.com This is a SAMPLE presentation

  2. Overview of the book: • EDUCATION • Lack of control over education leads to lack of true knowledge of self • Education and action must have a plan to uplift people • Education has made many selfish, impatient and unfit for the “real world” • Skills (especially non-academic) often go untapped or underdeveloped • Education must be overhauled to truly uplift the people • Education must lead to vocational and financial reform • THE MIS-EDUCATED • The “talented” have either abandoned the people or only come back to use them • The church has done a poor job of teaching co-operation among people with diverse differences • GOVERNMENT/SOCIAL • The negro must learn how the government works • Inconsistency with social wants have led the Negro to stagnation • New ideas for social uplift are needed • Politics must be used as a tool for social uplift for all • LEADERSHIP • The most important need is people willing to work towards the important goals • Look back to the past to learn, learn the lesson, create plans to uplift from it • Imitation of others does not bring freedom • It is the negro’s fault where he is today, and the negro’s responsibility to change it

  3. Ch 4. Education Under Outside Control • The only way to help people is to help them help themselves • Real education inspires people to live more abundantly • Not to complain about things that they have no solution for changing • Protest is acceptable ONLY when it is supported by a constructive program • People with Ph.D.’s tend to lose touch with “common people” AND their own creativity • Main Point – Education and action must have a plan to uplift people • Q1: What are we currently doing with our education to inspire others towards their potential?

  4. Ch 11. The Need for Service Rather than LeadershipCh 12. Hirelings in the Places of Public Servants • Outsiders claim that we lack mental power and are therefore unfit for leadership • There will be no advancement if constant abuse is turned towards the exploiters • Especially since the race itself is most at fault • Exploitation will continue as long as the race allows • Lots of money/support is given to misleaders • Flashy, exciting programs get support; constructive programs generally do not • A real servant of the people must be a part of them, study them; have the most humility • People can’t move forward when leaders take them backwards • The large majority of people do not think • Main Point – The most important need is people willing to work towards the important goals • Q4: Does the memory of certain events/experiences keep us from advancing? Is there misplaced blame for our situations?

  5. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK • There is no way that we can cover all of the wisdom in this book in 1 hour. This is just an introduction to a few points made by the author. The intent is to spur some thought and discussion. There is no substitute to reading it. Read the book. • Read the book.
