    3. Generating Expressions and Solving Equations Friday, September 28, 2012

    24. When writing equations, you need to be able to translate from a verbal sentence to an algebraic equation. Addition: sum, increased by, more, more than, plus, total, and Subtraction: difference, decreased by, less, minus, subtract, less, less than, lower than Multiplication: product, times, of, twice, half, double, triple Division: quotient, divided by, divide into, divide among, ratio Equals: is/was, are, same as

    27. We can often use algebraic equations to answer questions about real-life situations. 1.) Select a variable to represent the unknown quantity and define it. 2.) Write an algebra equation using the variable in step 1 & the information in the problem. 3.) Solve the equation using required form. 4.) Interpret the solution as an answer to the question (label it)

    28. WATCH: When 5 is added to the product of 3 and a number, the result is 17. Find the number. Select a variable and define it. Write an algebra equation using the information. Solve the equation using required form. Interpret the answer (label it). x = number 3x + 5 = 17 x = 4 The number is 4.

    29. Formulas as Equations A formula is an equation that shows a relationship between two or more quantities. The quantities are represented by variables. In order to use a formula as an equation we will: write the formula needed substitute given values into the formula solve the resulting equation using required form label the answer

    30. WATCH: Find the area and perimeter of the rectangle shown below. Use A = lw, P = 2l + 2w . 2.4 cm 5.4 cm

    31. Find the width of a rectangle with a perimeter of 42 meters and a length of 14 meters. Use P = 2l + 2w . 42 = 2 (14) + 2 w 42 = 28 + 2w 42-28 = 28 – 28 + 2w 14 = 2w 2 2 7 = w width is 7 meters

    32. How to study for math…. Take your homework seriously. If you missed one, know why you missed it. Correct your quizzes. (even when you don’t get points for it) Work the review sheet like a “practice test” (remember the review sheet is not comprehensive) The night before a test you should look over homework assignments, quizzes, and your review sheet.

    33. Tonight’s Homework Review Worksheet Check your answers with the Answer Key or on the website.
