World military spending in 2010 • Total world military expenditure in 2010 is estimated by SIPRI at $1,630 billion. • Increase of 1.3% in real terms over 2009, and of 50% since 2001. • Total represents estimated 2.6% of global GDP, or $236 per capita. • The largest spender is the US, with 43% of the total in 2010. • However, largest relative regional increases were in South America (5.8%) and Africa (5.2%) in real terms over 2009. • Fall in one region: Europe, by 2.8% in real terms.

The United States • USA accounts for 43% of the world total. • US military spending $698 billion in 2010, increase of 2.8% in real terms over 2009, 81% higher than in 2001. • Rate of increase slower than in 2001-2009 period. • Military burden of 4.8% of GDP highest outside Middle East (of countries for which data are available). • Military spending remains largely protected in the face of efforts to cut budget deficit.
