  2. Description Session: CON2164 Title: Managing Sun Servers and Engineered Systems with Oracle Enterprise Manager Description: This session will help address the best practices of managing the various tiers of Oracle's Sun Servers and Engineered Systems using Oracle Enterprise Manager. Oracle Enterprise Manager provides management of the various hardware components of Oracle's Sun Servers and Engineered Systems, the automation of infrastructure tasks for Oracle Solaris, and the the ability to manage both database and applications tiers. The audience for this session will learn how to use Oracle Enterprise Manager as a single management tool for Sun Servers and Engineered Systems.

  8. Operational StandardsMore Important in the Cloud Gold Standards • Individual Steps are easy. Attaching them all together is difficult • Use EM as a tool to orchestrate your best admin scripts • Leverage automatic pull downs from vendors and industry repos for daily automatic compliance testing • Create smart groups to organize VMs into targetable objects for nightly patching tests • Quickly bring up Infrastructure to know works from the firmware to the virtual machine • Knowledge Capture and Share Vendor & Industry Deploy To Many

  9. OS Component Relationship Mapping • Problem made Complex due to both Release Timeline and Host level Change • The pkg level can’t see more than itself • Deep Software Resolution • readme, special instruction, header definition, binary, distro life cycle, folklore, unique host • Change Protection • Policy allows for more aggressive change adoption

  22. A Successful Path Forward What to Focus On • The Datacenter is big; stick with a goal or milestone path • Easy to become distracted • Start from a known point before introducing change • Once something is working, it’s natural to push out on scale • Question operational processes that have no known explanation • Bring them back to the business goal • Don’t sacrifice homogenous features for heterogeneous methods • Weight the benefit of using built-in technologies

  27. Consolidation at PaaS and IaaS Layers • Consolidate onto standard, shared and elastically scalable PaaS App App App PaaS • Standardized PaaS for all applications reduces heterogeneity, cost and complexity • Accelerated new application development • Cost savings from less hardware, power and data center space App App App vs. App App App • Software stack heterogeneity, cost and complexity persists • No administration (O&M) cost savings • Consolidate onto shared IaaS without standardization IaaS • Cost savings from less hardware, power and data center space

  28. Rich service catalog Java Services Database Services Middleware Service Capabilities include Request scheduling Basic resource monitoring Chargeback information Quota monitoring Cloud APIs Restful APIs, submitted to DMTF DBaaS/MWaaS/JaaS SPARC Portal Application Self Service

  29. Service Templates Building Blocks for PaaS/JaaS How to deploy a new service instance? Deployment Plan What bits to deploy? Enterprise Manager Catalog How to tailor the resource instance? Consolidation means moving multiple applications onto pooled or shared computing resources. You have a very strategic decision here. You can move onto shared, standardized platforms or shared infrastructure.

  30. Setup Service CatalogCapture -> Publish to Catalog • Publish Service Template to Service Catalog • Service template can be of type database or schema • Includes database or schema based parameters, along with data. • Create Small/Medium/Large variants • Capture Database Provisioning Profiles • Capture database templates and schema artifacts • Optionally, capture data using

  31. Database Monitoring • Additional capabilities include • Backup and Restore VM/Database • Oracle recommended (Weekly level 0, and daily level 1) • PIT recovery within last 24hrs • Basic resource monitoring • Start/Stop • Chargeback information • Charge trend, total $$, charge plan details, etc • Quota monitoring

  32. Database Cloud RESTful APIs When using non-OVM infrastructure i.e. physical or other VM technologies, then we use Deployment Procedures (DPs) as our provisioning/orchestration mechanism. Think of the database deployment procedure as a wrapper on top of DBCA, where you can save configuration details for the database like memory, cpu, storage, and other init parameters.

  33. Chargeback Reporting Chargeback Administrator Self-Service Portal User Line of Business User • Rollup based on LDAP hierarchy • Summary and Trending reports for Usage and Charge • Drilldowns • Integrate with BI Publisher • Generate Reports in variety of formats • Excel, Word, HTML, PowerPoint, PDF • Email or FTP reports • Charge Trend reports broken down by resource • Selectable detail levels • Charge Plan configuration
