  2. Summary China has one of the oldest civilization in the world. It has more than 5000 years of history. China is the largest country in east Asia. Emperors had the ultimate power in ancient China. Rice and Tea were first grown in China. There are still many unanswered questions about China.

  3. Geography China is the largest country in east Asia. Ancient China civilization started around the Yellow River and Yangtze River valleys. Yellow River is called the Cradle of Chinese Civilization. The size of China changed with each dynasty. It reached its largest size during Yuan Dynasty. Most Chinese people belong to the same race , the Hans.

  4. History China has more than 5000 years of history. There were many ancient Dynasties each ruled by a different royal family. The Xia Dynasty is believed to be the first dynasty of China and it began more than 4000 years ago. China was united under one country in Qin Dynasty. China was the richest country in the world in Tang Dynasty. China was largest in size in Yuan Dynasty. Famous warriors included Genghis Khan. China’s last Dynasty is Qing Dynasty. Pu Yi was the last emperor of China.

  5. Government Ancient China had monarchy, which means the government is headed by an emperor and a royal family. The emperor has the ultimate power to decide everything including the law in the country.

  6. Written Language Chinese is one of the world’s oldest written languages. Examples of the earliest writings go back more than 4000 years. Chinese writing uses symbols, which is called characters to represent the whole meaning of a word.

  7. Food Rice was the first crop farmed in China. Rice grew in China about 5000 years ago. Tea was a popular drink in China. People started growing tea more than 3000 years ago. Wheat was not native in China. People did not have wheat until about 3500 years ago.

  8. Unanswered Questions The rumor said there is a underground palace built in Qin Dynasty. Scientist are still looking for it. Where was Genghis Khan buried? Did Xia Dynasty really exist? How did their civilizations start?

  9. Fine Arts Ancient Chinese artwork has a lot of different forms. Most famous art forms include: Chinese painting, calligraphy, sculpture, pottery, folk arts, and paper cutting.

  10. Fashion People wore long and loose clothes in ancient China. They prefer darker color clothes than light color. Poor people wore clothes made of hemp and rich people wore silk. Both men and woman kept their hair long as they believed hair was a gift from their parents and it was disrespectful to their parts to cut it. At about 1100 BC, feet binding became a fashion for women.

  11. Ethical Issues Girls at young age had to suffer the pain of foot binding. They were not allowed to go to schools with boys. When they grew up, they were told to listen to their husbands.

  12. Commerce and Trade There was a lot of trade in ancient China within the country and between China and other parts of the world. Some traders went to South India, and some traded with the western countries along the Silk Road. Many people sent silk and tea to the west and brought gold to China. There were a few famous expeditions, of which the most famous one was done by a person called Zheng He in Ming Dynasty. Zheng He shipped goods along Indian Ocean and visited India and countries in Africa.
