History 3000 BC - Chewing of the Coca leaf is practiced all through South America 1400 ‘s - Coca plantations are operated by the Incas in Peru 1505 - Amerigo Vespucci brings coca back to Europe 1575 - Roughly 82% of the Europeans living in Peru were involved in the drug trade 1708 - Coca is first mentioned in a medical reference book 1850 - Coca extracts are first used in a throat surgery 1855 - Cocaine is first extracted from the coca leaves 1870 - Wine with coca as an ingredient starts being sold in France 1870 ’s - Parke-Davis produces a fluid extract from coca 1876 - Race walkers start chewing on coca leaves to improve their performance 1884 - Cocaine starts becoming popular as a local anesthetic for eye surgery
